Firstly five stars to TooledUp for delivering this way before estimated date and also at a price about 10-15% less than many other outlets. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and it's easily on a par with other Bosch power tools I've bought. Good solid engineering, accurate drilling, very acceptable noise levels, small footprint, very easy assembly from box, quick bit change from keyless chuck. There's nothing else on the market to compare with this on price. Most rivals have cumbersome belt-change speed system, the Bosh is electronically controlled - very precise. Buy one now, you'll wonder how you ever managed before.

I saw this advertised on the website. This is a magnificent bench drill. What makes it great its accuracy to put on a laser line and know exactly where you're going to drill and the feature that I love the best is to drill a hole the same depth every time this reduces making mistakes. Mistakes cost money

As a hobby tool this does exactly what I want. The depth guage is great, the electronic speed control works well, the clamp is useful and the size, reach, depth and chuck size all adequate. The lights and lazer sights are a gimmick (but impress the neighbors) and, if you are concerned enough about chuck wobble that you need to measure it, then I suggest you buy something a lot more expensive. My only "complaint" would be that the wheel is not as efficient as a 4 handled star, in that if you are drilling deep you have to reposition to continue. Other than that... For the money? ace!

Up to the usual bosch quality. Nice features are - keyless chuck, variable speed and quick release clamp. Some slight movement of drill chuck when drill engages work but less than many i have used in the past. Only disappointment was the condition of the packaging when delivered. It looked like a second hand unit with dents and scratches on every surface of the bosch box. Inside everything was obviously new with nothing in resealed bags etc. So bosch and tooled-up probably not to blame. More likely the carriers. Although i suspect many would refuse delivery of anything in similar condition. I nearly did. I think perhaps bosch, tooled-up and carriers might benefit from some form of outer protection. as it does what i think it says, or should say, on the box i'm happy with my purchase.

I use the drill for boring pieces of hard wood like ebony. It is really quite powerful and the head travel is excellent... What gives this drill an advantage for me is the fact that apart from the 90mm travel, if you release the stop, the head will continue down, giving you the ability to drill from the top of the column to the bed. The gap is surprisingly large... It looks quite small in the pictures but i have a compound slide table with a tilting vice fitted and i can still fit a forstner bit and drill through 100mm pieces of wood. The digital depth gauge is very useful. my only gripe is that the head is not completely rigid and will move from side to side slightly. When drilling metal, a spot drill guide is essential. It definately does more than any other pillar drill in the price range.

As mentioned by others the laser is inaccurate, so therefore pointless. (i don't know if you can adjust it.) the clamping bracket tends to fall to the table when you remove the workpiece and can get a bit stuck, requiring a bit of a fiddle to lift it. A thin plastic collar at the base of the pillar would correct this. I tied a bit of earth sleeve around mine. The drill bit does wobble a bit, but for my level of skill it was ok. The actual operation of the drill is good, with the digital depth gauge being useful.

After seemingly endless research and reading a lot of mixed reviews on this particular drill, i bit the bullet as i needed a solution quickly and the overall concept appealed to me. first of all it was much cheaper than anywhere else, the ordering process and delivery were very straightforward and pleasant. in the box, the product is nicely presented and i was able to set it up and start using it immediately without reading the instructions. So far i have not bothered to make use of the electronic depth guage, still preferring to mark a depth stop on the bit with some coloured tape. the laser is a gimmick, the lines simply aren't fine enough and you should always bring the bit down to the workpiece to align and mark it. Likewise the two white led lights only light the workpiece from one side, not good if the workpiece is not totally flat and they are also not very bright. it has a röhm chuck, which at close inspection appears to be much more precisely made than the jacobs 4000 chuck on my bosch psb 850-2 re and pretty much every chuck on a hand held drill i've seen in the consumer-oriented market. The jaws have a more sharply machined appearance and close together perfectly on my unit. By eye, the trueness appears better too. I've lost enormous amounts of sleep reading about chuck wobble on drills but one thing i have recently discovered is that none of my drill bits are perfectly straight either. Simply rolling them on a flat surface is not enough to tell, as most of them are off by a tiny amount that won't be noticed until trying to drill a precise hole. that brings me to the next point i found of concern, namely complaints of lateral play. Whether by design or not, it probably helps more than it hinders, given my experience of bits never being perfectly straight either. If there was no lateral movement at all, smaller bits would snap sooner than later.

I bought this drill because i need to drill accurate bolt holes in my model aircraft propellers amonst other things. When the drill arrived the bosch seal on the box had been broken and i was not happy with the way the drill was packed so i requested a replacement. This took another week to arrive and once again the bosch seal had been broken but the drill and packaging looked ok so i accepted it. The drill works fine however the laser pointer is not accurate as the alignment to the drill point goes off by a few millimeters at the workpiece. It works ok as a rough guide though. I particularly like the clamp which works great for everything i have drilled up to now. All things considered i am happy with the bench drill, it does have a lot going for it and i would recommend it but i do think it is overpriced.

I bought this to replace my pillar drill. It seems a good choice for me as most of the holes I drill are in long flat pieces of timber which is nigh on impossible to do on my pillar drill. I have mounted the pbd40 next to my compound mitre saw on a metabo extending work stand so that the base of it is level with that of the compound saw. As far as I can find this is the only bench drill where the head comes down to the work piece and for the work I do it seems very satisfactory. Features wise the variable speed is excellent though you should note that you do not set the speed to a value rather it tells you what speed you have set, by turning the knob on the front, when you actually start it up. It is also very easy to work the depth feature. I was concerned about the size of the machine but there is plenty of clearance for drilling into even quite a large piece of timber if you wind the head up to the top. The weight is just about manageable for me (over 50 female) to move around the workshop and I dont think it will prove too heavy and bow the work stand as it is a similar weight to the mitre saw. The chuck is a bit unusual or is this a standard bosch feature. I dont know. This is the first Bosch machine in my workshop. You tighten it by hand and turn a locking ring but I am sure I will get used to that and it seems to hold the drill bit securely and accurately. I like the simple but practical parallel bar which is easy to move and has a flat upright which means you can clamp to it in addition to using the hold down clamp. The reason I gave it a lower value for money is that it is quite noisy and I would have thought for the money this could be better. As far as accuracy is concerned, it seems fine for my purposes such as using forstner bits to mount hinges on cabinet doors. Hope that helps folks.

A mistake buy..No use for precision modelling...Too much 0.7mm main shaft sideplay in bearings. This was an enormous design shortsightedness. When using small drills the play error can be significant as to drill off the center line. This isn't the first Bosch i've given bad notes for, perhaps the fact that they are produced in china has alot to answer for the bad quality control; and it's poor. Sorry Bosch, my old ital pillar drill scores way better.

Great idea poor delivery. first one returned with defective electronic depth gauge. replacement has 2mm lateral movement. customer services are undoubtably the worst i have ever encountered (bosch). on first occasion it was returned zero communication, i had to repeatedly contact bosch repair centre for information, most of what i was told seemed to be just a fob off "awaiting parts from germany"' which clearly would have to come from china were the product is made. "it's green therefore not to be used professionally"(i make garden tables as a hobby). after many calls i was eventually told a replacement would be provided, which it was. when i contacted bosch again about the lateral movement i was told " this is not a precision tool!" but they would contact germany to inform me of the design tolerances. reply - silence. poor product, and very poor after sales/customer services. to be avoided

Customer Questions & Answers

David Elkins asked on 17/01/2023

Q : Hi does this product come with a built in guard ?

TooledUp answered on 17/01/2023

A : Hi David, the PBD 40 doesn't have a guard and as far as I know Bosch have never made one for it

Ben asked on 26/07/2021

Q : I'm looking for a compact pillar drill that is powerful enough to easily drill into hardwood (primarily oak) with a Forstner 38mm drill bit. Is this drill powerful enough or would you recommend a different pillar drill for the job? Space in my workshop is limited, so I'm looking for a compact model.

TooledUp answered on 27/07/2021

A : Hi Ben, well Bosch list the PBD 40 as being suitable for drilling holes of up to 40mm diameter in wood so you should be within the upper limits of its operational capability, but I'm afraid I'm not sure if it will do it "easily". Unfortunately the performance of these machines tends to rise directly in conjunction with their size and weight so it may be a bit of a compromise, although good quality sharp drill bits will help of course.

Tom asked on 12/02/2021

Q : Can a Bosch PBD 40 bench drill be used for light milling?

TooledUp answered on 15/02/2021

A : Hi Tom, I'm not sure what application you have in mind, but the Bosch PBD 40 can't be used for milling in the usual sense of the word as it is only designed to go up or down on the vertical axis. We do sell a few machines which are designed for light duty milling, for example the Draper MILL-170 on product ID 21006625

Eric Dunkley asked on 24/01/2021

Q : Throat dims please

TooledUp answered on 25/01/2021

A : I checked with Bosch to see if they could provide any more specifics on the drilling capacity of the PBD 40 and they advised that with the drill head at the very top of the column there is 285mm between the front face of the chuck and the bed. The stroke is 90mm. As well as this the bed dimensions are listed as 330 x 350 x 30 mm so hopefully this gives you a good idea of what will realistically fit onto it.

Tim Ewers asked on 06/02/2019

Q : The chuck on my PBD 40 will not grip the smallest drill bits I need to use in fine metal work. Is there any way around this problem?

TooledUp answered on 07/02/2019

A : I can confirm to use bits with a smaller shank than 1.5mm you would need to use a Pin Chuck
