They are not suitable for outside ponds or other dirty water as they will only usually allow small particles to pass through. Most clean water pumps will allow suction to a very low level (normally within 5 - 10mm) before they cut out but remember this only applies if they have a float switch. Dirty Water Pumps:These are suitable for the drainage of most water types as they allow for a much larger particle types. Be aware however that they will usually drain water down to a level of between 25 - 50mm depending on the particle size that they allow for. Automatic cut out only applies if they have a float switch. Unless specified dirty water pumps are not suitable for agriculture type use or for drainage of water containing salt or other chemicals. The term 'dirty' in most cases applies to 'water contains small particles such as grit, sand, mud and small pebbles'.Considerations when buying a Submersible or Surface water pump:1. Particles over 1mm generally, can only pass through dirty water pumps. Always buy a pump that will allow the particle size that you require to flow through it.2. Float switches enable the pump to cut-out when the water reaches the minimum level at which the pump can operate without overheating. Clean water pumps can operate at a lower level than dirty water pumps as they do not have to account for particles being able to pass through the bottom of the pump. Pumps without a float or auto cut out type switch cannot run automatically and have to manually be controlled.3. Water pumps have differing flow rates so ensure you purchase a pump capable of transferring water at your desired speed; this is normally calculated as litres per second or litres per hour.4. The distance or height that a water pump is capable of moving water is known as the lift height use the following calculation to determine if the pump is suitable for your requirements:The maximum flow rate of a pump is directly affected by the height it has to lift the water. In general the flow rate will decrease as the lift height increases. Horizontal pumping distance is also affected use the formula Max Height - Working Height x 10 to determine the maximum horizontal distance the pump will be capable of.It is recommended that an RCD is always used with a submersible pump as should be the case whenever electrical products are used near water.Important:Most submersible pumps require a lay flay hose (except water butt pumps) which have a wider diameter than garden hose in order to drain the water without damaging the pump, to allow for particles (if applicable) and to allow for fast flow rates.

After looking at alternatives i bought this to replace an identical one which served faithfully and effectively for 6 years switching on and off regularly to keep rising water from flooding a cellar. old one eventually failed through an electrical fault probably caused by water getting in where it shouldn't as it still works except when completely submerged. A little tricky giving the float sufficient room to rise and fall on the end of its lead in a confined space without fouling on anything, and this could be a determining factor in some cases. the float needs to be able to rise and fall at a minimum distance of about 40cm from the body of the pump. It has to tip over to switch the pump on and off.

I think it is brilliant. I don't think i'll ever need to replace it.

Shifting dirty water in an overflow sump very nicely, we generally replace the pump there every 18 months to 2 years lets hope it goes on for at least that long, if it does it will have been exceptionally good value. It was much cheaper than the pumps we ususally buy.

This pump is pumping silo effulent which is nasty stuff. Works well with float and can move the volume fast.Time will tell

I only learned about the duty limit on hours of continuous running (6 hours) after i took delivery of the pumpand read the detailed specs :-). this replaces a pond pump that ran continuously for around 3 years for a big pond but that in the end failed . It needed to be cleaned of weeds and muck regularly or it would foul. i let it go untended for too long one time too many and it failed. :-(
so, i got a digital timer, coupled it with rcd protection and have set the pump to run 3 hours on, 3 hours off, 7 days a week. we will see how long it lasts. it needs to last for 9 months to be as cost effective as the pump it replaces. the previous pump was a clean water fish pond pump that cost £260 so by comparison this pump is very reasonably priced.
flow is strong.
the deciding factor for me was that it is a dirty water pump so should need less attentiion.

I have had three and one is still in service. One failed within a couple of months and sealey refused to repair it under warranty. They are the judge and jury in deciding if any signs of use can be classed as abuse.
pumps well when it works. The dangly cable and float devise is a terrible idea and just begs to get snagged up. I had to build a quite elaborate enclosure to ensure it couldn't happen.
i am just waiting for this to give up the ghost and have an american zoeller pump waiting to do the job on a permanent basis.

Bought to clear excess rain water from our cellar. seems well built and performed very well when tested before installation. takes a little time to set the switch so that it comes on at the correct water depth.
