I have always used Spear & Jackson secateurs as I have found them to have sharp blades and therefore easy to use when pruning etc.
However, I've only been able to give a 3 for performance and 2 for build quality for the following reason: The design of the sliding lock seems to have been changed since I last purchased a S & J secateur. With these new secateurs, if you are reaching upwards to prune the lock slides back (not quite to the position when the blades are closed) which means that after cutting one stem you cannot continue cutting stems at that angle. Instead you have to adjust the lock after each cut and this is extremely frustrating as you cannot get on and prune a high hedge etc.
Otherwise the sharpness of the blades etc is OK
