They give the user a rapid snapshot of the general state of a building, & which areas are the dampest. As they don't need to be physically inserted into walls, using them causes no damage. Moreover, they can be used to check behind materials that would make insertion impossible, such as ceramic tiles or vinyl floor coverings. If no problems are expected, & you simply want to take the precaution of 'clearing' a building before you make a purchase, a Radio Frequency Damp Detector will serve you well. However, radio frequency models are only able to detect moisture close to the surface of a wall or floor. If you want to be able to pinpoint exactly where the damp is most concentrated, & assess the real extent of the damage, they will be the best option. Double Pin Damp Detectors are operated by inserting a pair of metal prongs into the building substrate. The faster an electrical circuit between the two prongs is completed, the higher the water content of the building material being tested. Double Pin Damp Detectors give users a much more accurate picture of a damp problem because they can be inserted at multiple points along a wall or floor, giving you differing readings. The depth of insertion can also be varied, to determine the depth to which the damp has penetrated. Other uses for Double Pin Damp Detectors include testing the moisture content of wood prior to splitting or burning.
