Garden Forks

What you need to know about Garden Forks

A good Garden Fork is one of the most essential pieces of gardening equipment. They can be used for a number of tasks, from digging to loosening soil for cultivation, & from breaking up deep weed growth to unearthing root vegetables in a growing patch. They are also preferred to spades & shovels for turning compost heaps. Turning is a vital step in effective composting - it improves aeration, which speeds decomposition, & releases nitrogen build up, reducing odour emission. Garden Forks have an advantage over Spades in that they present a lower surface area at the point of contact with the ground. A greater amount of the force from the gardener's body weight is thereby applied to the soil beneath the prongs or tines of the Fork. This allows Garden Forks to be used to penetrate stony, dry, heavily compacted or clay enriched soils where using a Spade might present difficulties. Garden Forks come in two varieties: Digging Forks & Border Forks. Border Forks have narrower heads suitable for use in tight spaces, or in areas where greater precision is required, for instance when planting flower beds. The broader head of a Digging Fork, on the other hand, means that a greater volume of earth can be moved more quickly - making them ideal for bigger jobs.
