Mauls

What you need to know about Mauls

Mauls are long shafted hammers with heavy steel or rubber heads. The most common use for a Maul is in conjunction with a Splitting Wedge, for splitting log rounds into firewood. The maul is used to drive the wedge into the round in order to force the wood fibres apart. We also stock Fencing Mauls, with cylindrical heads designed for driving fence posts into the ground, & rubber-headed Paving Mauls, for knocking awry paving slabs, flagstones & kerbstones into place. The rubber head of a Paving Maul has the weight needed for the necessary force to be applied, but absorbs enough force at the point of impact to prevent damage to the stone.

The most important consideration when buying a Maul is the material that the handle is made from. Wooden Handles (often purchased separately from the head) provide good impact absorbance & hardiness, whereas fibreglass handles have the advantage of being lighter, reducing user fatigue. Wooden Maul Handles should be treated with Boiled Linseed Oil to keep them in good condition.
