Pickaxes

What you need to know about Pick Axes

Pick Axes are large, heavy axes with double ended heads. They are used as a digging tool, for breaking up hard, dry or compacted soil, for breaking ice & concrete & also for grubbing (removing the stump & roots of a fallen tree). An ordinary Pick Axe heads terminated in a pointed end, used for striking, & a chisel-like blunt end, used for prying. Mattock Head Pick Axes will be preferred for grubbing; instead of a pointed pick blade, mattock heads have two flat blades, one angled horizontally relative to the shaft, & the other vertically. The horizontal blade also makes an excellent digging & hoeing tool. Mortar Picks have similar heads to ordinary pick axes, but are smaller. They are used for removing old, dried out mortar prior to repointing.

Aside from the style of head, the most important consideration when purchasing a Pick Axe is the material that the handle is made from. Wooden Handles (usually purchased separately from the head) provide good impact absorbance & hardiness, whereas fibreglass handles have the advantage of being lighter, reducing user fatigue.

Wooden Pick Axe Handles should be treated with Boiled Linseed Oil to keep them in good condition. Pick Axe Heads should also be wiped down with a cloth oiled with a rust inhibitor, such as GT85 or WD40 after use.
