Bosch PBD 40 Bench Pillar Drill 710w 240vWith the PBD 40, Bosch have built a powerful, reliable 710W bench drill - & then enhanced it with a variety of innovative & advanced design features. An electronic display provides exact speed setting in rpm, & precise drilling depth indication accurate to the millimetre. Once you've chosen a speed, Bosch's 'Constant Electronic' technology maintains that speed regardless of the intensity of the workload, providing optimal adaptation to different materials. Varying applications can also be adapted to using the drill's 2 speed gearbox; the 1st gear delivers greater torque & the 2nd more speed. Positioning even awkwardly shaped workpieces with exactitude is made easier by the PBD 40's precise parallel guide & quick action clamp, & an integrated laser & LED PowerLight give users a better view of the workpiece during operation. Other features include a softgrip coated, smoothly rotating wheel for controlled lowering of the drill, a keyless chuck which automatically retightens the drill bit, & a retaining ring which guarantees optimal torque delivery.Features & Benefits:• Controlled, material-specific speeds can be easily and accurately preset thanks to the electronic speed display and Constant Electronic• The innovative digital display makes it easy to read the exact drilling depth. Even rows of holes, e.g. for wooden structures, can therefore be drilled without any problems• With 2-speed gearbox: high power in 1st gear, high speed in 2nd gear• The high-quality, keyless precision chuck automatically retightens the drill bit. The retaining ring guarantees a perfect hold on the drill bit• Integrated laser to assist with drilling: for easy, precise drilling - at exactly the required position. The LED ensures that the work area is well lit• Even round workpieces can be fixed conveniently using the quick-action clamp - for an absolutely precise drilling result• The parallel guide and the large work plate ensure accurate and safe positioning of the workpiece• The rotating wheel with integrated softgrip allows for a controlled, comfortable drilling rateSpecifications:Power input: 710 WNo-load speed: 200 - 2.500 rpmNo-load speed (1st gear / 2nd gear): 200 - 850 / 2.500 rpmLaser type: 2Max. drilling diameter in steel: 13 mmMax. drilling diameter in wood: 40 mmChuck jaw width: 1,5 - 13 mmDrill stroke: 90 mmBase plate dimensions (W x D x H): 330 x 350 x 30 mmMachine weight: 11,2 kg Functions:Laser drilling guideIntegrated work light

Up to the usual bosch quality. Nice features are - keyless chuck, variable speed and quick release clamp. Some slight movement of drill chuck when drill engages work but less than many i have used in the past. Only disappointment was the condition of the packaging when delivered. It looked like a second hand unit with dents and scratches on every surface of the bosch box. Inside everything was obviously new with nothing in resealed bags etc. So bosch and tooled-up probably not to blame. More likely the carriers. Although i suspect many would refuse delivery of anything in similar condition. I nearly did. I think perhaps bosch, tooled-up and carriers might benefit from some form of outer protection.
as it does what i think it says, or should say, on the box i'm happy with my purchase.

Now that i have got it working good for what i want it took me three days to fathom out the problem was to take out the bit (out of chuck)the book says unlock then turn chuck anticlockwise well if you are standing in front of drill looking straight at chuck you will turn chuck left to right which i did turns out the more i did this i was tightening it it took me 3days to release bit eventually bit fell out then i could see what i had been doing wrong i still think this needs looking at i asked 8 different people to turn chuck anticlockwise and they all did the same as me(so we must all be bloody thick) must have sent dave 6emails he was very obligeing (ithink)any everthing ok now

I use the drill for boring pieces of hard wood like ebony. It is really quite powerful and the head travel is excellent... What gives this drill an advantage for me is the fact that apart from the 90mm travel, if you release the stop, the head will continue down, giving you the ability to drill from the top of the column to the bed. The gap is surprisingly large... It looks quite small in the pictures but i have a compound slide table with a tilting vice fitted and i can still fit a forstner bit and drill through 100mm pieces of wood. The digital depth gauge is very useful. my only gripe is that the head is not completely rigid and will move from side to side slightly. When drilling metal, a spot drill guide is essential. It definately does more than any other pillar drill in the price range.
