Bosch Power For All Tools<\/h1>\n

The Power For All system is a cordless lithium ion battery platform that spans the Bosch DIY<\/a> and garden<\/a> product ranges. With the announcement of their upgraded 12v system, we take a look at the options available on the market today, and the advantages of the technology built into them.<\/p>\n

As you may be aware, Bosch split their power tool ranges into two main product groups: Blue \u2013 Professional, and Green \u2013 for the home consumer market. The Green product group includes DIY power tools, which can be identified by their green & red colour scheme, and garden power tools, which are usually more of a turquoise colour (there are also products that don’t quite fit into either category, like cordless vacuum cleaners, radios and Bluetooth speakers). While tools from the Bosch Blue range have to be built to withstand daily abuse in industrial environments, the Green ranges are built to a lighter duty specification and hence come with a much lower price tag, making them an attractive option for users such as homeowners, DIYers and weekend woodworkers. Combined with Bosch\u2019s enviable reputation for engineering prowess, this has resulted in Bosch Green tools occupying a premium position in the home & garden sector for decades.<\/p>\n

Power For All batteries can be used to power cordless vacuum cleaners like the Bosch EasyVac 12<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Power For All is a relatively recent addition to the Green product group, and is a lithium ion battery platform that spans 10.8v, 18v, and now 12v cordless tools. As with other battery platforms, the batteries and chargers are designed to be interchangeable with tools in the range as long as they correspond to the same voltage. However, the good news for everyone who has already invested in 10.8v Power For All tools is that the new 12v range is backwards compatible with the 10.8v range – that is, all 10.8v batteries and chargers can be used with the 12v machines and vice versa. The very simple reason for this is that the batteries and chargers are actually still exactly the same! In America, where power tool manufacturers usually label their batteries according to peak voltage, Bosch have always marketed their 10.8v range as 12v, and to achieve greater international consistency, they have decided to rebrand their European 10.8v range as 12v as well. So while this will have no doubt caused some confusion at first, eventually all the existing 10.8v tools will be phased out or rebadged as part of the Power For All 12v system.<\/p>\n

So the Power For All user essentially has a choice between 12v and 18v platforms. The 18v machines offer a good balance of power and runtime while the 12v machines deliver less power but with the advantage that they are smaller, lighter, and less physically demanding, making them ideal for lighter duty tasks and situations such as working overhead or in cramped conditions.<\/p>\n

Syneon Inside<\/h4>\n

The Syneon chip is an energy management component that helps to maximize runtime.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Something common to all new tools (and many pre-existing tools) on both platforms is the inclusion of what Bosch call a Syneon chip<\/a>. This is an integrated circuit which provides an intelligent battery management function; it monitors load conditions on the tool and ensures that energy is delivered when it is needed (for example when driving larger screws or sawing through dense wood) but also conserved during less demanding applications. As well as providing a boost in performance when needed, this helps to minimize unnecessary energy drain and ultimately provides the user with longer runtime per battery charge. For example, in tests by an independent laboratory the Bosch PSR 18 LI-2 Drill Driver was found to drive on average 20% more screws or drill 37% more holes per charge than market alternatives. As well as this respectable margin of endurance, the Syneon chip also ensures that performance remains constant right up until the point that the battery is discharged, rather than the gradual slowdown that can signify battery drain in many other cordless tools.<\/p>\n

Electronic Cell Protection<\/h4>\n

Electronic Cell Protection, or ECP for short, is another Bosch technology built into Power For All tools which helps to maximize the usable lifetime of the attached batteries. Based around subverting three damaging conditions that can affect lithium ion batteries \u2013 overload, overheating and deep discharge, the ECP system automatically shuts the tool down if it detects the battery is becoming overloaded or overheated and ensures that the battery cannot reach a critical level of discharge. All of this helps to keep Power For All batteries performing at their best for longer.<\/p>\n

Power For All Warranty<\/h4>\n

One of the other advantages of the Bosch Power For All range is that unlike the standard one year warranty offered by many other tools intended for the home & garden market, they carry a three year guarantee if registered with Bosch after purchase (though note that as DIY tools this does not cover professional or commercial use).<\/p>\n

New Tools<\/h4>\n

Amongst long term stalwarts of the range and best sellers like the Bosch ART 23-18 LI 18v Cordless Grass Trimmer<\/a>, Bosch ALB 18 LI 18v Cordless Garden Leaf Blower<\/a>, Bosch PST 18 LI Cordless Jigsaw<\/a> and Bosch PSR 18 LI-2 18v Cordless Compact Drill Driver<\/a>, there have been a number of new and innovative tools added to the lineup over the course of the last year or so.<\/p>\n

First of all, Bosch debuted some power tool technology that had never been seen before when they introduced the Nanoblade in 2017; essentially a miniaturised chainsaw which was developed to assist with easy to control, vibration free sawing. Amongst the first three tools to be equipped with this feature was the Bosch EASYCUT 12 LI 12v Cordless Nanoblade Saw<\/a>, part of the new 12v Power For All range. Occupying a sort of middle ground between the garden and DIY ranges, this innovative little tool is ideal for pruning branches in the garden as well as assisting with woodworking and DIY tasks, where the reduced vibration makes it an easier to control alternative to tools such as jigsaws or reciprocating saws.<\/p>\n

Also appearing in 2017, the Bosch ADVANCEDGRIND 18v Cordless Angle Grinder<\/a> is the first of its kind in the Green range. A 125mm (5\u201d) machine with variable speed control, a soft start motor and rapid action brake, this tool enables Power For All users to accomplish a variety of cutting, grinding and wire brushing tasks without being tethered to a power lead, making it perfect for working outdoors, while up a ladder, or in any other situation where a cable might get in the way.<\/p>\n

Bosch are well known for their oscillating multi tools and both the 10.8v and 18v Power For All ranges are represented in this context by the Bosch PMF 10.8 LI 10.8v Cordless Multi Tool<\/a> & Bosch ADVANCEDMULTI 18v Cordless Oscillating Multi Tool<\/a> respectively. The 10.8v machine has a slimline form factor and is perfect for precision tasks, while the larger 18v tool includes an LED light strip for improved visibility and an anti-vibration auxiliary handle for maximum control.<\/p>\n

The Bosch PSB 18 LI-2 ERGONOMIC 18v Cordless Combi Drill<\/a> has a unique design and is one of the most technologically advanced machines in the Power4All range.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The cordless combi drill, a staple tool of DIYers everywhere, has also been the focus of the Bosch engineering and design teams recently. The result, the Bosch PSB 18 LI-2 ERGONOMIC 18v Cordless Combi Drill<\/a>, is a decidedly futuristic looking machine which is intended to provide better ergonomics (hence the name) while offering additional technology more commonly found on Professional grade tools: this includes a brushless motor, constant electronic speed regulation, and a kickback control system for user protection against high torque reactionary forces (in the event of a bit or accessory jamming). The PSB 18 LI-2 also has a base mounted worklight which ensures illumination of the work area is not obstructed by the chuck.<\/p>\n
