Battery AH Explained

The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. More amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.

Battery Voltage Explained

A tool with a higher voltage than another is a bit like choosing an engine in a car, the higher voltage will generally mean higher power & performance. As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.

DeWalt Flexvolt

DeWalt 54v Flexvolt is the new DeWalt dual voltage system. A 54v Tool can only use 54v batteries, however your new DeWalt 54v Flexvolt battery is fully compatible with all DeWalt 18v Li-ion Power Tools as it is capable of stepping into 18v mode for this purpose.

So upgrading to 54v means you can still make use of your 18v power tool range. 54v batteries are currently available in:

6ah (18v mode) / 2ah (54v mode)
9ah (18v mode) / 3ah (54v mode)
12ah (18v mode) / 4ah (54v mode)

The DeWalt Flexvolt system opens the door to types of tool becoming available in cordless that would never have been considered before such as Table Saws.

Had this drill for a couple of years now and theres nothing that compares to it really. Last christmas one of the lads I work with was bought a standard dewalt xr sds drill. We were on a job and needed to drill through an external wall so he's drilling away with his new drill and it gets so far and just won’t go any further (we thought he had hit rebar) anyway I thought I will try my drill on it - literally went through like a hot knife through butter. Thats the difference. So much more power. Only down side is its heavy and a pain in the arse if your just drilling a load of 5.5mm holes for red plugs. Thats why I've also got the dch273. For large heavy duty drilling this badboy is excellent. Don't have to worry about it biting and snapping your wrist either as as soon as the drill senses resistance it just cuts out. One lad tried to slag the drill off for this - I told him its not the drill its you. If it keeps biting your probably asserting too much pressure - ease off and let the drill do the work and wa’la went through like a dream. High quality tool. Is it worth the money? If your looking to get into the flexvolt range as I was then yeah I think so as its the batteries that bump the price right and once you've bought this kit you only need to buy flexvolt bare body tools next time as 2 9ah batteries is enough. Afterall you can only use 1 tool at a time. Highly recommend this for anyone who is serious about their work and does a lot of drilling into masonry/concrete. One last thing its very quick too - I can get through exterior walls extremely quick with this.
