Dovetail Saws Information

The Dovetail Saw is designed specifically for making the preliminary cuts for a dovetail joint. It is a type of backsaw, meaning it has a stiffening rib that runs along the top of the blade. This ensures the blade doesn't wobble during use, and enables the operator to cut straightly and accurately. Dovetail saws are equipped with fine toothed blades designed for clean cutting, and often have simple straight handles, though it is also to common to find models which look like smaller tenon saws.

Here's our quick application guide:

• Length - Due to the nature of the work they are designed for, dovetails are generally small saws and there is not much variation in the length of their blades.
• TPI - TPI stands for Teeth Per Inch. Saws with a low TPI value will cut quickly but coarsely, while saws with a higher TPI count will cut slowly but produce finer cuts. Dovetail saws usually start at around 13TPI which is considered a fine cut, and anything over this can be expected to give progressively cleaner results.
