Ear Defenders Ear Plugs

Ear Defenders & Ear Plugs Information

Many power tools and industrial machines are loud enough to cause hearing damage and ear protection is recommended to safeguard against the hazards of excessively noisy environments. HSE guidelines stipulate that employers should provide hearing protection if workers are exposed to noise levels of 80dB or above, and noise exposure should never exceed 87dB (with hearing protection taken into account). You can often quickly identify how much attentuation any individual product provides by consulting the description or data sheet provided. There are two main types of ear protection: ear defenders (ear muffs) and ear plugs.

Here's our Quick Application Guide

• Ear Defenders - also commonly referred to as ear muffs, ear defenders are worn over the head and form a seal over the ears to attenuate noise. They are quick and easy to use, and a pair of ear defenders is usually a good investment for regular tasks around the garden or workshop. Though they are convenient and economical for long term use, they do not typically offer as much noise reduction as ear plugs, and their effectiveness can be compromised if their condition deteriorates or if they are worn with other clothing or equipment like hoods, hats and safety glasses (though some are designed specifically for use with other equipment like hard hats).
• Ear Plugs - ear plugs are inserted into the ear canal and can provide more protection than most ear defenders; however, it is important that they are fitted correctly, and that they are clean. Ear plugs are unaffected by other PPE or clothing so can be used effectively with hats, hoods, face masks etc. They are also small and highly portable, though can be more tedious to use than ear defenders, and are not recommended for people suffering from ear infections.
