Ratchet Screwdrivers

Ratchet Screwdrivers Information

Ratchet Screwdrivers or ratcheting screwdrivers, are so called because they have an integrated ratcheting mechanism, like you would find on a ratchet handle for sockets. The ratchet can be switched to fastening or unfastening mode, as well as a neutral mode - in which case the tool operates like a standard screwdriver. With the ratchet engaged, the blade cannot move in the wrong direction but the handle can be wound back independantly after each turn. This means fasteners can be driven faster than a conventional screwdriver as the user does not have to constantly adjust their grip to rotate the whole tool. Because of the extra cost and manufacturing processes involved in making ratchet screwdrivers, they are typically bit holders designed to be used with any 1/4" hex shank screwdriver bit. This makes them very versatile but also means they tend to have thicker shafts than standard screwdrivers and may not always be able to access deeply recessed fasteners.
