Vernier Callipers

Vernier Callipers Information

Vernier Callipers, or calipers, are extremely useful tools for ascertaining interior, exterior and depth measurements. As well as the large pair of jaws for clamping around an object, they are equipped with jaws which spread outwards for gauging internal measurements, and a tail, or depth rod, which is used for measuring depth. Vernier callipers are so called because they implement the vernier scale which was invented by French mathmetician Pierre Vernier for enhanced precision in critical applications, and as such they are capable of very accurate measurements. However, reading a vernier scale requires an understanding of how it works and for the inexperienced it can be fairly unintuitive and time consuming. Partly as a result of this, digital vernier callipers have become widespread and affordable, and they provide a supremely quick and easy way of working out precise measurements. The original vernier callipers still have their advantages though; there is less to go wrong over the course of their lifetime, and they will never run out of batteries.
