Coping Saws

Coping Saws Information

Consisting of a thin, fine cutting blade attached to a frame, a Coping Saw is similar in design to a hacksaw, except it is primarily intended for cutting wood and functionally it is much closer to another similar tool, the fret saw. Both the fret saw and the coping saw are designed for precision work and curved cuts, though the coping saw has a stronger, coarser blade and a shallower frame. This means the fret saw is more advantageous when cutting especially intricate curved patterns and working further from the edge of a workpiece, but the coping saw can handle thicker materials which may break the fret saw's thinner blade. Coping saws are commonly used for precision joinery tasks, curved cuts, patterns and cut-outs (with the blade detached, the saw can be passed through a starting hole before re-attaching the blade). As well as wood, coping saws can be used on materials such as plastic, ceramic and even metal, as long as a suitable blade is installed.
