Hand Saws Information
Hand saws encompass a wide variety of sizes and types and are mostly designed for general wood cutting applications, though some are made for other materials like plastics, breeze block or insulation. Hand saws differ from backsaws (like tenon saws and dovetail saws) in that the blade is not stiffened, enabling it to be flexed from side to side to varying degrees. The majority of hand saws are inexpensive and designed for fast and coarse cutting, but some are specialist tools intended to give fine finishes or optimum results in specific applications. We stock a selection of best sellers for professional trade or DIY use, including hand saws from Irwin Jack, Roughneck, Draper, Stanley and models from the Bahco PrizeCut, ProfCut, Barracuda and Superior ranges. Here's our Quick Application Guide:
• Length - some hand saws are small enough to fit in a tool box while many of the classic designs are produced in the 20" to 24" range. Although the right size of hand saw can be a matter of personal preference more than anything else, it is worth noting that longer saw blades can be more efficient and less tiring to use, as when used to their full potential they will remove more material per stroke. However, for finer work a smaller hand saw will obviously be a more natural choice.• TPI - TPI stands for Teeth Per Inch. Saws with a low TPI value will cut quickly but coarsely, while saws with a higher TPI count will cut slowly but produce finer cuts. Anything up to around 7TPI is considered coarse, and will cut aggressively, meaning less time and physical effort is required to finish the job. 10 - 20TPI is considered fine, and saws intended for clean, precision cutting are usually found in this range. Anything over this can be regarded as extra fine, and is rare to find in a standard hand saw.
