Belt Sanders

Belt Sanders Information

Instead of the sanding plates common to other designs of sander, belt sanders have a pair of drums onto which a sanding belt is attached. During use, this is rotated through the machine like a high speed conveyor belt. They are available in two main types: the standard belt sander, and a precision variant commonly known as a file sander, sanding file, power file or filing sander.

Here's our quick application guide:

Belt SandersBelt sanders are amongst the most aggressive of all power sanders and can remove large amounts of material rapidly. Because of this they are mostly used as a preliminary stage, e.g for preparing rough stock or removing an old finish. Their fast work rate also makes them a popular tool for sanding larger surfaces areas like flooring or decking. They will quickly gouge out visible marks in the material if left in one spot for too long so it is standard practice to ensure the machine is kept continuously moving while it is in operation (unless this is desired).
• File Sanders – these use much thinner belts which delegates them to more precise roles than standard belt sanders. They are able to sand in tight spaces which would be inaccessible to any other type of power sander, and the continuous rotation of the belt ensures maximum service life of the sandpaper despite covering a small surface area.

Belt Sander Safety:

Belt sanders are capable of producing a lot of dust and respiratory protection should be worn when using them. A high speed sanding belt can also cause injuries if you come into contact with it so make use of both handles to control the tool and disconnect from power before changing the belt or making similar adjustments.
