Firstly, the R18DD7 is equipped with a brushless motor - this energy efficient design is more commonly found in professional grade tools, and its chief advantage in cordless machinery is that it drains the battery at a slower rate, meaning you can get more work done on a single charge. Additionally, there are no carbon brushes to replace during the lifetime of the tool.

Two gears enable you to select low speed and high torque, which is ideal for screwdriving, or high speed, which is better suited to drilling with smaller drill bits. The adjustable clutch has 24 torque settings which enable you to sink screws flush to the surface no matter what material or size of fastener you are working with, and the forward/reverse switch means you can unfasten screws as well as drive them in.

An unusual feature of the R18DD7 is its chuck, which has an integrated screwdriver bit holder inside it. This means that screwdriver bits of a suitable length can be inserted straight into the chuck, without having to use a separate magnetic bit holder or tightening them in the jaws.

On the base of the handle, an LED worklight illuminates the work area whenever the trigger is depressed - a feature that makes it much easier to find recessed screws and fasteners in dark workspaces like kitchen cabinets. A bit storage clip lets you keep a commonly used screwdriver bit stored on the tool for quick and easy accesss, and a magnet also provides a handy storage space for small fasteners, parts and accessories. Lastly, a belt clip enables the drill to be fastened to a belt when climbing ladders or carrying equipment with both hands.
