Battery Voltage Explained
A tool with a higher voltage than another is a bit like choosing an engine in a car, the higher voltage will generally mean higher power & performance. As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.
Battery AH Explained
The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. More amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.

This is my second B&D Cordless Strimmer - the first was accidentally damaged beyond repair by my son strimming brambles! It was great to find that I could purchase a replacement at a good price, without needing to buy a battery and charger with it. It arrived quickly and is already in use. A great product and excellent service.
Only used once so far on my allotment. Very impressive performance on one charge. Easy to use and not heavy. I had problems with delivery which meant the strimmer had to be sent again. Not TooledUp's fault but I think they should change their courier.
Refreshing to find I could buy a replacement strimmer without having to buy battery and charger as well.
very pleased with this grasstrimmer - does a very good job - can't cut your plants with line - very quiet in use
just what I wanted to tackle an unruly garden. powerful lasting charge not too heavy for me. well pleased
Fast delivery thank you.
So far so good. Charge the battery, whack it in and away you go. Clean, efficient and hassle free.
Very pleased with the Strimmer, it's light weight and being telescopic is very handy when working on a steep slope at the end of the garden, being cordless also helps (no trailing wires) the battery charges in about 20 mins, all in all a quality piece of kit, perfect for my needs. Thanks.
Perfect for our mid sized garden. Very powerful. Easy to put together.
This is my second Black and Decker Strimmer, every bit as good as the one it's replaced. Very swift delivery from this company.
I have just taken delivery of the B&D 36V Trimmer. I ordered it without a battery, as I have three functioning batteries already. I have previously used the identical Trimmer on my two allotments for more than three years, and due to using it for far more arduous tasks than it was designed for, it finally wore out ( I have subsequently obtained the necessary replacement parts, and got it going again for about 1/3 the cost of a new bare unit - another useful feature of B&D products) . This trimmer is easily powerful enough for all normal tasks and has a good battery life. On light duties it should last about 30 mins, in Turbo mode considerably less. I did own an 18V trimmer several years ago, but it just wasn't up to the job. I can highly recommend this trimmer with the proviso that if you use it a great deal on woody undergrowth, it will reduce it's working life considerably. You can judge if you are putting too much strain on it by feeling for play in the revolving head - when this reaches a certain level, the motor metal drive cog fails to engage the plastic (nylon?) gear wheel on the head properly, and it suffers irreversible damage. One niggle is with the automatic line feed. After a while, mine started to consume line at an unacceptable rate - maybe I was just unlucky. This was easily circumvented by disabling the mechanism with a bit of duct tape over the pawl, and advancing the line manually.
This Black and Decker Strimmer supplied by Tooled up is an excellent little machine, light weight but does exactly what the information said it would. Worth 5 Stars
Excellent product, great service from Tooled-up.
The black and decker grass strimmer GLC3630L easily does everything I want it to do on one charge on a medium size garden. I’ve not tried the edge trimming on curves which most strimmer would find challenging. Great product for the money.
I bought this strimmer as a replacement for the same model, which had finally succumbed to very arduous use over a good few years. It is very powerful for a battery-operated strimmer and copes very well with dense vegetation. I find it light and easy to use.
Having had several corded trimmers for many years, I was fed up with constantly standing on the line and getting it tangled around trees. I was not sure that a cordless trimmer would be robust enough to tackle the weeds and coarse grass in my garden, which is quite large. I felt that maybe the battery would not last too long. I was wrong! This trimmer trimmed and edged 3 lawns and a large bank of grass that was made far easier to trim due to the absence of a cord which always used to get in the way. The battery allowed me to finish on one charge using the 'eco' setting and the 'turbo' setting cut down thick weeds and nettles with ease. A great tool at a great price!
Excellent product. Easy to use. Great battery life, ideal for large garden edging. So convenient, as opposed to trailing electric cables, or mixing fuel for a petrol strimmer. Also handy eco/turbo boost setting, for more lengthy grass. Would definitely recommend.
Thought it may not be man enough. But its excellent. No cable, light, recharges in under an hour, lasts long enough to do all my edges, and garden is large. And on turbo is an animal. Have had lots of strimmers over the years, this is my favourite of all. And reasonably quiet too. I recommend it. Indeed have done to my brother.
Only used strimmer a couple of times. Cuts lawn edges quite satisfactorily on low power. Well balanced machine and not too heavy. Battery life does not seem that good but a couple of recharges might perk it up. Head swivels very easily but the wire cutting guard then seems to get in the way.
Good powerful strimmer. Excellent service
I needed a lightweight strimmer with the versatility of cordless machine. This fitted the bill completely. Does the job very well and on eco mode the battery lasts a long time with no loss of efficiency. Very pleased with it - it is a Which best buy with good reason.
An excellent trimmer and an excellent price. I previously had corded trimmers, but wanted a good, cordless version. The reviews for this model were very good and I can only agree how good this is. I have three small/medium size lawns and the battery lasts long enough to strim them all.
Bought this to replace a Flymo I had been using for 4 years until it gave up the ghost. Planned to get a petrol replacement then seen this 36v strimmer and decided to go with this one instead of having the maintenance and constant filling of petrol etc. This product is nice and sturdy, seems well built to last time. Battery charged quickly around 1.5 hrs done it. Something I noticed was there is a single line feed on this strimmer which I thought may not be as good as the double on the previous flymo. Using it was a breeze. I have a small garden from a semi-d house but this strimmer was more than enough to get around it, trim all the edges on half power was sufficient. Crank it up to max power and its impressive however does eat the battery. I got around 25 minutes of trimming before the battery lost its power. I would recommend this tool but for small light jobs and nothing too heavy and once you are aware of this the strimmer will impress.
It does the job.
I have an old Worx cordless drill which still worx okay, even with the original batteries. I also have a Bosch cordless hedge trimmer, which I hardly use now, so I'm not new to cordless power tools. My old petrol McCulloch strimmer gave up the ghost recently so I was looking on Amazon for a replacement petrol strimmer when I noticed the B&D cordless jobbie and thought, why not. I bought it from Tooled Up in the end which offered the same good service as Amazon, but cheaper. Um' the trimmer :) .. I'm very happy with it and it does everything I want it to do, without the noise and fumes of the McCulloch. I've found that having just the one battery is adequate so I won't be buying a second one.
I use a lot of cordless tools in my job as a carpenter and joiner, and the battery on the Black and Decker strimmer is superb. I can not fault this item.
works very well easy to use does not run out of charge even on full power well built I can see this strimmer lasting for years great on the edges
Early days yet but after a couple of uses I am very pleased with the product.
Very quick delivery, better pricing than Amazon and top quality product. Recommend
powerful trim and good value
Wow! That's the fella! This strimmer is ready to go - at a moment's notice. It's powerful, but easy to handle. balanced and effective. None of all that faffing around with fuel, or untangling orange flex. Nope -it's clip in the battery, and off you go! Terrific!
After having my original purchase lost in the post ordered on the 7th April I received it today the 23rd April set it up and it worked just fine Did the job I bought it for so yes I am pleased with my Strimmer. Just wondered if I could purchase extra spools ????
This is a really good strimmer, with variable speed, so much better than my old one which was about £60, Tooled up were the cheapest and the strimmer arrived the following day....5 stars to tooled up
Excellent product. We had a previous model and certainly does a good job.
Excellent piece of kit ! Powerful, easy to use and efficient. Cuts all the grass I need to cut, does it all on Eco mode and I end up with 3/4 charge left !!
An excellent product for my garden! I have two 'elderly' petrol strimmers which are very heavy and cumbersome. This Black & Decker one is light in comparison. It's also very easy to use and has let me do things like strim under a henhouse and inside a small hen run. I've only tried doing edges once - it takes a bit of getting used to but once you have it works very well. Delivery was very prompt although unfortunately the courier delivered it to the wrong house, sending a nice photo to me of the wrong house. It turned up OK the next day. Easy to put together, height adjustable and simple to start and to use. What's not to like?
Bought this to replace a previous one that wore out. It lasted for about 5 years and was excellent so bought another one. Lasts for about 15 mins on full blast, longer if you turn down the speed. I use it for grass, nettles, hogweed, thistles etc, plus the occasional bramble. Works very well. Only gave it 4 stars for build quality, after all I had to buy a replacement!
I had the original version of this strimmer and was happy with it, but I damaged it (my fault, not the strimmer's) and although I repaired it myself it didn't run as smoothly or well. Finally, after having it for four years I bought this new one, but as I already had bought the new version of the battery it was nice to be able to buy just the strimmer without the battery. The new battery (2.0Ah instead of the original's 1.6Ah, so it runs for longer), and possibly some tweaks to how efficient the strimmer itself works, mean that it runs for nearly an hour in eco mode; even when new the original version only ran for about half an hour. So I'm very pleased with this purchase so far.
The item came well packaged, with all the bits that it should have. Assembly was quite easy really, just had to be a bit firm with some bits (you do try to be gentle with a new purchase). The first few days after it arrived it threw it down with rain so could not be used...typical. When hubby did get chance to use it, it worked very well. He appreciates the lightness of the battery pack (this replaces one of about 10 yrs old that had a battery pack you carried with a strap over your shoulder. Also the power is very good, it does a great job at our allotment where the paths grow big clumps of grass that are tough to strim. Battery charging is reasonably quick and lasts enough to do what we need. The only criticism hubby can come up with is that with his old strimmer you could actually angle the head...with this you can't.
Bought this to replace an old B&D 18v strimmer. This is a far better product all round. It feels nicely balanced. The 36v battery takes no time to charge and lasts for ages. It makes a neat job of lawn edges and cuts through fairly tough grass and weeds easily. Very pleased with my purchase.
Excellent for serious work. Charge last about an hour on max power, but with two batteries that's fine. Easy to add new cord.
This was a replacement for the same four year old product that 'died' after twine wrapped around motor and stripped the gears. Apparently you cannot get spare parts for black and decker! I use it on my allotment and it is so superb that many fellow gardeners there have bought the same machine. Powerful and battery lasts long enough to complete half the paths on my ten rod plot.
I am a gardener by trade, and this grass trimmer is absolutely perfect for all the gardens that I maintain. This is the second one that I have purchased, the first one I used for 3 years trouble free, I think that I just wore it out because I have used it so much. The powerful battery lasts a very long time and only takes about 30 minutes to recharge. I would not hesitate in recommending anyone to buy one, you will definitely not be disappointed.
This is the best strimmer I have used and it was highlighted by WHICH as a Best Buy I bought the same strimmer which lasted 3 years
Replacement purchase, last one performed well for over 4 years. would recommend.
Replacement purchase - previous trimmer fell to pieces after 5 years of use (but charger & battery still ok so didn't need to replace). lightweight and powerful (even on the eco setting - which I recommend as it gives about 20-25 minutes of use). can't be bothered with petrol monsters even though I have a one acre garden - if you want something light and easy to manoeuvre this is the deal!
Very impressed by the power of it, hard to think it is only 36 volts. Would be better if it had twin lines to increas cutting speed but that is only nit picking. Variable speed control is novel but it works and I guess saves the battery. All in all a good buy well built
I have had this strimmer for around a month now and must say I am highly impressed with everything about it. This strimmer does what it says on the tin and I would highly recommend this unit
I have owned this machine for a little over six weeks, so i don't feel qualified to comment on reliability so far. i bought this machine, along with the 36v hedge-trimmer gtc3655l20 (also excellent) as both use the same 2ah battery, giving me twice the endurance if required. I also bought the small "lawn mower" deck attachment as i've got a couple of small patches of grass which can't be cut conveniently with a full-size lawnmower. Avoiding dragging around a long power extension cable is a huge advantage and an incentive to do a "little and often" approach. the first thing to note is performance, and i would say it is excellent and the equal of any mains powered strimmer i've owned. The linefeed mechanism appears to work well. as far as endurance is concerned, i have a reasonably large size garden (about 45 metres x 25 metres), and one charge is sufficient for three or so strimming sessions including some heavy stuff under hedges (or which i've got about 25 metres). i would say that if you need something more powerful than this, you need a petrol strimmer with brush-cutting capability. I see no need for a mains strimmer. i have just ordered the 38cm cordless lawnmower in the range (which comes with two of these batteries) on the same "little and often" approach to keeping the lawn in order.
Bought in conjunction with mower, excellent, just as much power if not more than my old mains powered strimmer.
I have not had the trimmer long but feel it will do all that I want of it
Though only used for short period to date, the strimmer is impressive, well designed, well made and well balanced. The battery seems to hold its charge well, and is likely to give at least an hours' use before recharge is required. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny. Highly recommended.
Arrived quickly....Gave battery a 1hr charge and spent 5 mins putting machine together and reading instructions. First use was a very positive experience with no issues
Bought this strimmer to use on my allotment and i am impressed so far. On the economy setting the battery lasted for about 1 hour and coped with grass approximately 5-20cm long. I tried the turbo setting for longer clumpier grass but this drained the battery within 15min. Probably best not to let the grass get too long. This strimmer is light as it is mostly made of plastic and is very easy to use.
The trimmer arrived quickly. It was easy to put together ready for use. Charged the battery. after cutting my 5 lawns i used this trimmer to tidy-up areas the lawnmower missed and after edged the lawn. once i had adjusted it for balance it felt light and comfortable to use. The battery is easy to slot home and remove. I used it for 20 minutes and it had plenty of residue power. No lead and no extension lead to worry about - lovely. Did the job with ease. Unlike my old one I did not have to touch the spool as it fed through automatically. Therefore the job was completed very quickly. It was easy to swivel the head for edging the borders. Quality build and good value for money. Look forward to using it again. I have a b&d hedge trimmer with exactly the same battery - a bonus!
By far the best strimmer i've ever owned. the battery lasts for a long time. my lawns cover approx 1/3 acre and the battery allows me strim my lawn edges at least twice on one charge. no need for mains cables with extension leads, and no petrol engine to mess with. battery technology has come a long way in recent years. the only negative is the lack of a guide wheel.
I bought myself one of these on my dad's recommendation along with the black and decker hedge strimmer. both lightweight, easy to use, sturdy and well made. my friend used mine and also ordered one the same while my father's friend did likewise. very pleased with the product and the quick delivery.
I have had this b&d glc3630lc unit for just under a year . I am very pleased with it , it works fantastic , and since i have had it , only had to charge it 3 times. its so powerful , that i only run it at less than half it speed . for years i have used 240v trimmers , and they are not a patch on this. the other thing to mention is that the line feed system works perfectly . I can not recommend this model enough . 100% perfect. well done b&d , and worth every penny from tooled up. Chris p
Very pleased with this machine. indeed i have just ordered another for our other garden!
Delivery was superbly fast, thank you. this strimmer does just what i want it to do. Easy to control, fast efficient. Thank goodness the nylon cord actually adjusts, normally this is a flaw with strimmers of this kind. battery last very well.
Cut through our overgrown grass and tough weedy patch with ease. Easy to handle and the battery recharges quickly. So far, this strimmer is in a superior class of its own by comparison to other cordless brands we've had.
I bought this after reading all the favourable reviews and have not been disappointed. It's light and very effective and recharges quickly. buy one - you won't be disappointed!
Fast, efficient delivery of trimmer. very pleased with product so far, perfect for strimming the rough ground outside my garden which the council grass cutter always manages to miss. easy to use and battery life excellent. would definitely use tooled-up.Com in the future.
Perfect for edging our large garden. no trailing wire, plenty of power and a long lasting battery. my husband is very pleased.
This is a very good piece of kit for the money. Well designed. Battery lasts about an hour from charge. Great for edging and getting under overhanging shrubs where my mower can't reach. My wife uses it more than me and she finds it light and well balanced for use. Impressed.
I purchased this item, with a little bit of depredation, i was wrong, i cannot fault this grass trimmer in any way, it lasts for an hour on low and half an hour on high, just as it states, it will cut damp grass, no problem, i cannot state enough how delighted i am with this trimmer. Worth 5 stars and not any less.
Does its work well. The best feature is the battery life. i can do 4 times the work of previous models on a single charge. Inclined at times to vibrate. however well happy with its performance.
Bought this for my husband, who finds it works so well. no cords, powerful and the battery lasts ages. more than he needs for our large garden.
Excellent at its job within anticipated limits. The strimmer is light and easy to use, and works well for half an hour on the eco setting which is fine for cutting the long grass on our paddock. The battery charges up fully in an hour and a half - enough time to rake up the cuttings and have a cup of tea before the next session! It struggles a bit with dense, established nettle beds but our previous corded strimmer wouldn't go near them. build quality loses marks for the plastic protector but it remains to be seen how long this will last.
Prior to buying this trimmer i had a 2 stroke petrol one. it used to take me ages to get the machine started and when it did start it often stopped before the job was finished! my wife was genuinely worried about my blood pressure as my language was not for others to hear!! Anyway this machine is terrific, it starts right away and battery seems to last ages, it's quick to recharge and it is a joy to use?? ps - the line also feeds itself????
Very pleased with performance and quality of this strimmer. made light work of overgrown nettles on road side outside my house. light and easy to use; battery life very good even on turbo. Only slight niggle that i had to manually alter the cutting cord which i understood lengthened automatically.
Like this alot. It knocked down nettles easily while on full power but needed a charge soon after. Used it as a hedge trimmer on half power in the shortest position - it did a good job, recommended it.
Not had this strimmer long, but overall very impressed with it. Really light & easy to use, but powerful too. Excellent build quality and design features. The lithium ion battery charges in no time at all, and seems to hold charge for ages. I would definitely recommend this product.
An excellent product the li-on battery makes all the difference.. Highly recommended.
Fantastic bit of kit. Very simple to use, light and powerful. Great for me as i am quite small, but also adjustable for by husband who is tall. Quite pricey for a strimmer but worth it for the more powerful motor.
Excellent time saving product. very effective with long lasting battery.
Been using my new black & decker grass trimmer on my allotment and is giving a first rate performance. Weight is just right, feels good and solid. Dual power control very useful - use turbo on tough and weedy areas and eco for edging. Cutting line lasting well and keeping to good length. Battery life excellent - does all my allotment on one charge. No longer using mower on grass paths - turbo setting does the job in no time. Would like tooled-up for their excellent service. Ordered trimmer in june but out of stock due to high demand. Tooled-up emailed me constantly with updates. Telephone once and also had excellent service. Thank you.
Excellent service and product at a very good price
Powerful for a battery. Long lasting charge. Line feeds easily with no manual intervention. flexibly positioning.
Much better than our old (flymo) cordless strimmer; lighter in weight but performance not lightweight. Used mainly for strimming allotment paths; on eco setting, runs for well over 15 mins, which is sufficient for us (and battery recharges quickly.) shaft length & handle position both adjustable; easy to rotate head position for edging. Removable battery means that the charger can be located apart from where the strimmer is stored. only bugbear is cleaning; there are lots of stiffening ribs under the cover, which fill with grass cuttings. [a design improvement would be to have the ribs on top - less pretty but more functional.]
Really pleased with this, fast, efficient, my allotment looks neat and tidy. Easy to use and so far battery life is great.
Forget petrol strimmers that never start this is the answer.Easy fed line cuts well along walls without wearing away too fast. Not quite a brush cutter but easy to keep garden trim. Two batteries plenty to finish all the garden.
Brilliant tool, i am really pleased with the performance for a cordless, plenty of power, easy to use and plenty of cutting time on one charge.A good idea to use economy cutting or other, depending on what is being cut.No more un ravelling cables and sorting out an extension cable, on the job and working in seconds.
To be fair this has been beyond our expectations. It is simple and easy to use, have used on both grass and weeds. I thought it would stall on weeds but it really did very well. The fact it is is so portable and no need for trailing leads or petrol makes it more desirable. Certainly worth considering for any domestic garden environment.
This trimmer has made such light work of edges and awkward areas of my garden. No tiresome cables and plenty of power from the battery and i can trim all of the lawn edges etc of a reasonably large garden well within the capacity of the battery. The trimmer is well balanced, adjustable in height/ length and a joy to use. It's now one of my favourite garden tools and it's so much quieter than my old mains trimmer. the service from tooled-up was exemplary in terms of promptness, friendliness and price and i will use them again when buying tools etc.
If you want a strimmer to do the job then buy this product. It's a wee bit expensive but it's powerful and allows you to complete the majority of work required in most situations. I use it in the garden but also to tidy up my family's graves in the church yard. It's easily transported and the adjustment range allows any size of person to operate it but it is a little weighty. The power pack charges speedily and the charge indicator is very useful. Would definitely recommend it and would buy it again.
really light and easy to use yet powerful too. i love it and being cordless is a dream!
So far this has been an excellent piece of equipment...
Only used it half a dozen times but i love it! For a battery driven strimmer the the power is great. So good in fact, i still haven't used it in turbo mode. Lithium ion batteries are a godsend!
As with all my purchases, did loads of research and this strimmer came top, on paper at least, so bought it! it did not disappoint. bearing in mind the high-end battery, and the power and longevity that comes with that, the tooled up price makes it excellent value. light and powerful with speed control, there is nothing else you could want from a strimmer!
Very good indeed if you need to strim away from a power source. I get 45 minutes from one charge. Well made, i really like the telescopic adjustment which means it is very easy for two people of different hights to use. Pricey but worth it
Does the best job of any trimmer i have owned or used, it lasted 1 hour on the charge, turbo works better than i could have hoped, cannot complain, this lasted the hour on my allotment, grass was wet and over 2ft tall, used turbo for the last red light on charges and it lasted between 10 and 15 minutes, i recommend this grass trimmer
Excellent product. Light, easy to manoeuvre. Used on tiny area of garden as well as on a substantial sized roof garden that had not been tended for years and consequently, was overgrown. so far i cannot fault the product.
I have had a flymo strimmer for longer than i can remember as it is now showing its age i decided to buy a new one and decided on this model, i now don't have to worry about the weather and getting my extension cable out as i have a large garden, i can now walk around without having to worry about the cable getting wrapped around tree's etc and the battery lasts me about 2 weeks on eco mode, so if its peace and quiet then i can recommend this strimmer.
At last a robust, effective and easy to use strimmer. The lion battery has plenty of power and lasts for 30 minutes. More than enough to strim everything in sight. I thought the 36v version might be too heavy but li-ion batteries are so good now that it is a lightweight tool to handle but with the power of a corded version. Don't hesitate - this is the bees knees. Black and decker are now producing better quality tools than bosch.
Best cordless strimmer i've owned so far, plenty of power for tackling everyday gardening tasks and charge lasts well. Not used extensively yet, but difficult to fault so far, even the mrs rates it! i don't usually rate black & decker products too highly, but this tool is an exception, even the build quality is high.
I am a garden pro and wanted something quiet for small jobs of an evening without having to cart petrol. I took a punt on this and it has taken 3 seasons of abuse and is still going strong. It is not as powerful as petrol, though on turbo it can hold its own with 22cc but drains very fast on eco it is perfect for finishing round flags etc and will cover a large garden tidying with plenty to spare i recently took a 12 x 8 m2 area with 17cm grass to 4cm-1 bar left recharges fast. Only quibble the auto feed works but could do with a pointed base to aid mowing
Please note this is not a criticism of tooled up Hi I bought the Black & Decker GLC3630L 36v Cordless Telescopic Grass Trimmer 300mm from you two years ago and used it last year. However although the motor continues to run it has now stopped turning the strimmer wire holder. I am wondering if other people have reported this issue. I am now left with a battery and charger but no workable trimmer and living in Scotland there seems to be no support service from black and decker. Do you warn people of this issue? I approached a local firm who said the parts for b and d are expensive and difficult to get.
Utterly gutless. Thankfully I bought body only. Wrongly assumed it would perform as well as strimmer. It didn't! Avoid, spend extra and get a decent corded or petrol machine.
