The chainsaw provides an extremely fast and efficient way to prune or fell trees, as well as prepare them for firewood, transport or storage. In addition to the large petrol machines commonly used by professional loggers and forestry workers, there are a wide variety of smaller petrol, electric and battery powered models on the market which have become increasingly popular amongst gardeners and home owners for property maintenance tasks such as pruning branches, felling small trees or shrubs and cutting up logs. They are most commonly powered by petrol, corded electricity, or lithium ion battery.

• Petrol Chainsaws - although developments in battery technology are providing increasingly powerful alternatives to combustion engines, petrol engines have historically offered a superior combination of power and portability, and remain the tool of choice when it comes to heavy duty workloads. The downsides are that they can sometimes be difficult to start and require more maintenance than electric types, along with the concerns of buying, transporting and safely storing the fuel required to run them. Additionally, as well as being more powerful, they tend to be heavier and harder to control than electric machines. Therefore they are not always recommended as a first choice for inexperienced chainsaw operators.
• Corded Electric Chainsaws - a corded electric chainsaw starts instantly at the press of a button and brings with it the potential for unlimited runtime, as long as you are working close to a power socket. They are not as powerful as petrol machines and are usually reserved for pruning branches, preparing firewood or taking down young trees. Although they are less powerful and easier to control than petrol chainsaws, the power lead can constitute a hazard if it is tripped over or sawn into so care must be taken to keep it out of the work area during use.
• Cordless Chainsaws - usually powered by lithium ion batteries, these are generally reserved for lighter duty tasks, though performance can vary based on operating voltage and battery capacity. They can offer the best combination of convenience and mobility, but they cannot currently match petrol machines for sheer power.

Chainsaw Safety:

Chainsaws are dangerous machines and should be handled with caution. Wear protective chainsaw clothing along with a safety helmet and visor to ensure optimum safety. Under certain conditions, chainsaw chains may kick back towards the user so make sure you are familiar with the correct operating procedures and are confident in your ability to use the tool safely. Remember electricity can be dangerous in wet conditions, and ensure any leftover fuel is stored safely in between uses.
