Rust Oleum 769 Damp Proof Rust Primer Metal Paint

The Rust-Oleum 769 Damp-Proof Rust Primer is a specialist metal primer formulated for application directly onto hand-tool prepared, sound rusted steel surfaces — even in damp conditions.

Based on a fish oil alkyd resin, this primer contains rust-inhibitive pigments that work into corroded steel to prevent further deterioration. The formula is lead-free and chromate-free, making it a safer choice for professional and industrial use.

Designed primarily for brush application, the 769 can also be applied by roller or spray, offering flexibility across different site conditions. It is particularly well suited for use as part of a multi-coat system, providing effective protection under light industrial exposure when followed by a compatible Rust-Oleum alkyd primer or Alkythane 7500 topcoat.

With a theoretical coverage of 14.5 m² per litre at 35 µm dry film thickness, a single litre goes a considerable distance on prepared steel structures, steelwork, and metalwork subject to surface rust. Drying times vary with temperature — at 20°C, the primer is touch dry in 4 hours and ready to recoat after 24 hours.
