DeWalt DCD470N 54v XR Cordless Brushless Flexvolt Right Angle Drill

DeWalt's DCD470 is a cordless right angle & diamond core drill which is designed for regular drilling of large diameter holes through materials like timber, brickwork and concrete block. Like it's predecesor, the DCD460, the DCD470 is ideal for drilling into studs and joists but a new slimmer profile and the capability to tackle core drilling tasks will also increase its appeal to a wider range of trades and professions which include plumbers, electricians, HVAC installers, and general builders or contractors.

The DCD470 has a variable speed trigger and two speed settings which enable it to run at a maximum of either 400RPM or 1250RPM. It can supply up to 135Nm of torque and has an E-Clutch to protect the operator against violent twisting if a bit jams. DeWalt's E-Clutch feature detects reactionary torque caused by binding or stalling and reduces speed to a manageable level, enabling the operator to safely regain control of the machine. An adjustable bail handle and two position (left or right) side handle also ensure a secure grip and safe handling in a wide variety of working positions. The slim head profile allows the machine to be used in restrictive workspaces and the metal gear housing protects against accidental impacts and damages.

Part of the DeWalt Flexvolt range, the DCD470 is a cordless machine which runs on high power 54v lithium ion ranges, combined with an energy efficient brushless motor which helps to ensure runtimes can be extended for as long as possible. As well as providing the increased power needed by 54v tools like the DCD470, Flexvolt batteries can also be used with machines from the DeWalt 18v XR range which will typically result in a massive increase in runtime. This means Flexvolt tools can be easily integrated into 18v DeWalt tool kits without having to carry around lots of different batteries and chargers.

Battery AH Explained

The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. More amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.

Battery Voltage Explained

A tool with a higher voltage than another is a bit like choosing an engine in a car, the higher voltage will generally mean higher power & performance. As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.

DeWalt Flexvolt

DeWalt 54v Flexvolt is the new DeWalt dual voltage system. A 54v Tool can only use 54v batteries, however your new DeWalt 54v Flexvolt battery is fully compatible with all DeWalt 18v Li-ion Power Tools as it is capable of stepping into 18v mode for this purpose.

So upgrading to 54v means you can still make use of your 18v power tool range. 54v batteries are currently available in:

6ah (18v mode) / 2ah (54v mode)
9ah (18v mode) / 3ah (54v mode)
12ah (18v mode) / 4ah (54v mode)

The DeWalt Flexvolt system opens the door to types of tool becoming available in cordless that would never have been considered before such as Table Saws.
