Excellent product, used for tidying up my hedges, have only used ancient bill hooks until now but very impressed with this one. highly recommended !

Double edge bill hooks are the best type of cutter for chopping firewood. My dad had one for years and now we have wood stove i decided to get one, so far as i know the stafford is the only one with a cutting edge on the straight edge. Good weight and balance make it easy to use. Have absolutely no use for it in hedge laying (its proper use) so cant comment, but the blades both look central to me.

This bill hook is very well built and is good value for money. however, if you don't have access to a workbench and grinding tools it is not going to function very well at all. the cutting edge is so thick that when the hook attempts to cut into a tree branch the steep angle of the blade throws the hook back out of the cut. In other words it rebounds out of the branch without cutting it very deeply. the wooden handle is round and rotates easily within the grasp of your hand; this, combined with the poor cutting edge make it extremely difficult to control. i had to place it in the vice in my workshop and work on the bottom half of the blade, both front and back blade, with a grinding wheel to slowly reduce the thickness of the metal as it approached the cutting edge. Once that was done i worked on the handle to flatten the sides, making it less round and easier to grasp firmly so that it did not twist in my hand when i used the bill hook to cut with; more like a single edged bill hook handle.

An excellent billhook for the money with a good thick steel blade. However the edge has been sharpened at an obtuse angle which makes it difficult to slice cleanly through branches. I had to make use of a file to improve the blade in order produce a gently sloping shoulder to an acute edge.

Cannot give you a satisfactory review of the bill hook as it is, as we speak - or correctly type - en route to mexico where it will be a belated christmas present for my daughter. I have such a tool myself however which is excellent, much more usefull than a small axe or hatchet for splitting kindling wood. thank you for your prompt service. jonathan scott
