I have one of these down my allotment and it has survived a lot of use in heavy clay soil so I bought one for use at home. It is well made and robust. Stainless blades win every time over carbon steel as they are easier to clean and there is less tendency for soil to stick to the blade. The new one has a lip at the top of the blade, which is useful if you have thin soled footwear. However, when digging holes for posts etc. then lip can get in the way.

Q : Hello as your stainless steel digging spade does it have foot grip on it and its not boader spade thanks peter Lacey
A : Hi Peter, this model has a rolled edge at the top for applying pressure with your foot (although you can't see it on the image) Spear & Jackson describe it as a digging spade but if you're concerned over the size the dimensions are specified in the description, which will hopefully enable you to check whether or not it is suitable
