Black and Decker GKC1000 18v Cordless Alligator Powered Lopper
Battery AH Explained
The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. More amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.
Battery Voltage Explained
A tool with a higher voltage than another is a bit like choosing an engine in a car, the higher voltage will generally mean higher power & performance. As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.
Black & Decker 18v System
The Black & Decker 18v Li-ion System is a range of 18v tools where all 18v batteries of all ah ratings fit all tools, allowing you to buy just a few batteries but as many of the range of bare tools that you need without the expense of a new batteries and chargers each time.

Great to deal with.
Does the job. Gets a bit heavy after a prolonged period of holding at arm's length. Need to remember to shake out the chainsaw chips that gather in the front loop. The 2Ah Li bty has a surprisingly long mission BUT it would be useful if it was furnished with a line of 3 LEDs to give an indication of charge left like the DeWalt Li bty. The oil reservoir is strange because it's hidden so one can't see how much is there + the filling bottle has a non-positive screw valve that doesn't stay where it's set!
Bought this as a "safe" chainsaw. It does a great job. The battery lasts a reasonable amount of time, takes a little time to recharge but I can get a couple of good lopping sessions in a day which is enough for me. Managed to get the chain trapped by not being careful which way I cut the branch but lesson learned. Perfect for what I wanted it for and a reasonable price.
This product is amazing ....it can cut through conifers with ease ...and is safe to use and not scary compared to a chain saw .... if the trees or bushes have thicker trunks you can angle the loppers to cut one side then the other ...I would thoroughly recommend these ...honestly they are so good ...
Using this to clear an overgrown hedge, found it dealt with some of the thicker branches no problem. My 60 year old wife uses it mainly and even with the extra weight of the 4.0AH battery finds it easy to use
Cuts through relatively thick branches with ease. I feel pretty safe using it...it is fairly light and easy to maneuverer , but after half and hour using it it seems much heavier. highly recommend for easy, safe and speedy cutting.
Absolutely brilliant at lopping off branches and cutting back conifers took 2 days to cut back conifers last time with normal chainsaw and big loppers, this time with the Alligator literally done in 2 hours tops so simple and effective.
This is my second Alligator, had the 1st one for many years and have given it a very hard time, still going but getting tired. would strongly recommend as is very safe to use and easy to operate. It would benefit from a better system to oil the chain. I use an oil can and put the oil straight on to the chain.
Basically does 'what it says on the tin'; a good tool for lopping and other casual work around the garden. Not a heavy duty saw - but does not pretend to be so. Reasonable value for money.
Excellent saw that is safe to use. Would recommend highly.
A good easy to use alternative to a full blown chainsaw. It cuts well and is easy to handle. A definite positive upgrade on our corded version which has finally given up the ghost after many years of hard use.
Happy with it so far, only had it out to test but got away with it easily and feel safe and confident using it.
My wife uses this to chop branches into logs. It handles 4 - 5" or so diameter, and feels safe to use. It is amazing just how many logs she can cut on one charge.
I had a load of branches to cut up into firewood and having watched a neighbour using the corded version I decided to order one for myself. I ordered the cordless ones and a spare battery. I am very impressed how easily it cut through the branches and how safe it felt to use.
Perfect for those branches too large for loppers. Cuts through with ease. Battery performance seems very good & you can interchange then with other B&D products. The guards covering the chainsaw teeth are a great feature which stops you cutting through the branch & accidently impacting the ground, if you're cutting up already fallen branches. The guards also act like teeth gripping the branch as you cut, which greatly improves control. Only downside (so far in my use) is the chain oil reservoir is small, gives no ability to gauge how much oil is remaining & is fiddly to refil. Getting into the habit of regularly topping up is a must. If that aspect could be changed this would be 5* all day long! Has saved me ages I would have spent manually sawing... Plus you get to tell people you'll bring your "alligator" over to help out chopping!
Arrived promptly. I must say I am totally in love with my Alligator - I had a spinal operation a year ago and wasn’t sure how I was going to get on with the machine but it’s lightweight and dead straight forward to use/handle. I have just turned 60 years old and thought I would have to get someone in to do the necessary job but with the storms this weekend as well, I have been able to do it myself and love having my independence back! It has paid for itself the first weekend I have used it!
Everything is good about this product with the exception of oiling the chain, it is very difficult to know how much oil has gone into the nozzle as most seems to finnish outwith the main chamber, the safety aspects of this product are excellent, the idea of the lithium battery is another good safety measure as there is no cable trailing, very pleased with this product, it's very good at cutting branches and small limbs and it is not too heavy
An excellent piece of kit, very well made and with long battery life. I can see this saw being part of my tool box for many years to come. Service from Tooled-Up was excellent and saw arrived two days ahead of prediction. An all round satisfactory experience
A very good and safe tool. Could do with an up grade to enable it to cut items a bit bigger. Strangely I haven't used it yet as often as W . I have used the corded version often and like it also apart from the fact that the saw length is also a little short.

Customer Questions & Answers
Q : The armature on my alligator was damaged by some cutting. B&D no longer do spares. I am seeking replacement armature, even a used one. Any ideas, before I have to go and buy a complete new one. Southampton Hants.
A : Good morning, I am afraid we do not sell spares.
Q : What is the weight of this Alligator with battery on ?
A : Hi Adriana, it will depend what size of battery you're using it with (a 1.5ah battery will weigh less than a 4ah battery for example) but on average it should be around 4.5kg in total
Q : Is it possible to upgrade my still fully functioning GKC 1000P with a newer 18v lithium battery and appropriate compatible charger.
A : Hi Christine, unfortunately the Black & Decker lithium batteries weren't designed to work with the older tool ranges which used battery technologies like Ni-MH. I think (in the US at least) DeWalt brought out an adaptor that enabled you to do this when they introduced the XR li-ion battery range, but I'm not aware of Black & Decker having released a similar kind of adaptor for their battery platforms.
Q : Since Black and Decker does not make the 18V battery for the cordless alligator, what battery can I use that is compatible
A : Hi Jack, the GKC1000 runs on Black & Decker 18v batteries - these are listed on our product page as suggested accessories and note that you can also buy the tool as a starter kit with battery and charger included (you select the kit version you want from the green drop down menu on our website)
Q : I have an original Black & Decker Alligator & need a new battery charger for it - it’s a Ni-cad battery charger I need please.
A : Hi Trevor, I'm afraid we can no longer supply Black & Decker NiCad batteries or chargers. There's a chance you may still be able to get one as a spare part if you contact Black & Decker directly
Q : Does this unit work with 36V Battery as well?
A : Hi Srinivasa, no - I'm afraid the Black & Decker 18v and 36v batteries are not interchangeable
Q : We can no longer purchase this cordless Alligator in New Zealand and mine has finally failed. Is it possible for you to export it to me? Regards Sue
A : Hi Sue, unfortunately we can only ship within the UK. I'm not sure how it works in New Zealand but you may be able to get one imported through eBay? Here in the UK we can order goods via eBay sellers in other countries, but it may be different in NZ of course. Good luck!
Q : Does the battery require the charging unit, or just plug it in?
A : Hi Viv, these batteries are recharged in a separate charger, which is included with all versions of this machine except the bare tool (which comes without battery or charger)
