Battery AH Explained
The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. More amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.
Battery Voltage Explained
A tool with a higher voltage than another is a bit like choosing an engine in a car, the higher voltage will generally mean higher power & performance. As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.
Black & Decker 18v System
The Black & Decker 18v Li-ion System is a range of 18v tools where all 18v batteries of all ah ratings fit all tools, allowing you to buy just a few batteries but as many of the range of bare tools that you need without the expense of a new batteries and chargers each time.

An excellent piece of kit, very well made and with long battery life. I can see this saw being part of my tool box for many years to come. Service from Tooled-Up was excellent and saw arrived two days ahead of prediction. An all round satisfactory experience
A very good and safe tool. Could do with an up grade to enable it to cut items a bit bigger. Strangely I haven't used it yet as often as W . I have used the corded version often and like it also apart from the fact that the saw length is also a little short.
I used a friend's Alligator to fell and thin some of his trees. I was so impressed that, despite also having two petrol chainsaws, I decided to buy one. It's so easy to use, not too heavy, safer than a conventional chainsaw and much quieter, and yet, with care, you can fell or thin fairly large items. My only reservation is that the reservoir for the lubricant is not big enough so you must remember to add more chainsaw oil every few minutes.
I am entirely satisfied with this product. The instructions were clear and the operation was straightforward. I needed to lop a number of branches from an apple tree, including some of about 10cm diameter, and it coped comfortably with this. I felt safe and secure throughout the process. The oil needs to be purchased separately.
Good bit of kit. Have hacked all the overgrown trees and shrubs. Quite addictive. My wife had to stop me from creating a desert garden.
I have not really used this product but it looks as though it will be of service and I hope it will be what I expect of it
Excellent. I've bought two other different tools for the job and this one us by far the best. TooledUp price the best I could find
I didn't believe the Alligator would be as good as the reviews, but it is. I am using it to lay hedges and it is a dream. I was concerned it would be too heavy for me but I didn't notice its weight when using it. It is fab!
This purchase is a replacement for the same model we have owned for the last 13 years, it does an amazing job, the previous one has paid for itself over and over again, have had a replacement chain and battery but decided it was time for a new one, we are delighted with its performance.
Great device for trimming trees and cutting logs. Light enough for my wife to use, too.
Have had the corded version of the alligator for quite a while and loved it’s performance and ease of use but the cord can be a pain and worry plus of course you need to be near a power socket so decided to go for the cordless version. Find it just as good for cutting through some pretty thick branches, much easier with no cord to keep out the way and love the fact that the chain is kept relatively safely enclosed in the jaws. Have managed to cut my way through branches probably 5 or 6 inches thick, usually by cutting around. I did buy some spare batteries but probably didn’t need to as I did a couple of hours with the first one, bearing in mind that most of the time is spent climbing/positioning yourself and not cutting. Would definitely recommend this one. And tooledup were considerably cheaper than other places I looked, their delivery was great, ordered in the afternoon and it was delivered early next morning.
Does what it say on the tin (well, box). Simple, quiet, effective and cheap.
Excellent item and cannot be beaten on speedy delivery.
Excellent tool well made Does the job.

Customer Questions & Answers
Q : The armature on my alligator was damaged by some cutting. B&D no longer do spares. I am seeking replacement armature, even a used one. Any ideas, before I have to go and buy a complete new one. Southampton Hants.
A : Good morning, I am afraid we do not sell spares.
Q : What is the weight of this Alligator with battery on ?
A : Hi Adriana, it will depend what size of battery you're using it with (a 1.5ah battery will weigh less than a 4ah battery for example) but on average it should be around 4.5kg in total
Q : Is it possible to upgrade my still fully functioning GKC 1000P with a newer 18v lithium battery and appropriate compatible charger.
A : Hi Christine, unfortunately the Black & Decker lithium batteries weren't designed to work with the older tool ranges which used battery technologies like Ni-MH. I think (in the US at least) DeWalt brought out an adaptor that enabled you to do this when they introduced the XR li-ion battery range, but I'm not aware of Black & Decker having released a similar kind of adaptor for their battery platforms.
Q : Since Black and Decker does not make the 18V battery for the cordless alligator, what battery can I use that is compatible
A : Hi Jack, the GKC1000 runs on Black & Decker 18v batteries - these are listed on our product page as suggested accessories and note that you can also buy the tool as a starter kit with battery and charger included (you select the kit version you want from the green drop down menu on our website)
Q : I have an original Black & Decker Alligator & need a new battery charger for it - it’s a Ni-cad battery charger I need please.
A : Hi Trevor, I'm afraid we can no longer supply Black & Decker NiCad batteries or chargers. There's a chance you may still be able to get one as a spare part if you contact Black & Decker directly
Q : Does this unit work with 36V Battery as well?
A : Hi Srinivasa, no - I'm afraid the Black & Decker 18v and 36v batteries are not interchangeable
Q : We can no longer purchase this cordless Alligator in New Zealand and mine has finally failed. Is it possible for you to export it to me? Regards Sue
A : Hi Sue, unfortunately we can only ship within the UK. I'm not sure how it works in New Zealand but you may be able to get one imported through eBay? Here in the UK we can order goods via eBay sellers in other countries, but it may be different in NZ of course. Good luck!
Q : Does the battery require the charging unit, or just plug it in?
A : Hi Viv, these batteries are recharged in a separate charger, which is included with all versions of this machine except the bare tool (which comes without battery or charger)
