DeWalt DCMPH566 18v XR Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer 550mm
Battery AH Explained
The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. More amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.
Battery Voltage Explained
A tool with a higher voltage than another is a bit like choosing an engine in a car, the higher voltage will generally mean higher power & performance. As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.

The reason for purchasing the Dewalt pole hedge trimmer was to trim the tall fauna in the garden to keep tidy. The trimmer matched the task in hand, easy to operate, handle and has a bigger cutting head. Highly recommend.
Tooled Up offered the best value that I could find, with the order processing and delivery really smooth and efficient. I'm a fan of DeWalt products generally - reliable with good build quality. The Hedge Trimmer is less balanced than I was expecting with no adjustable handle to help with the usage direction. The shoulder strap fixing point not adjustable either - which would have helped with the weight and handling, but it does the job.
Easy to use. Bought this one due to larger cutting scope. Typically quality build of a DeWalt product.
This is a well made and substantial piece of kit that performs well. The head rotation through 180 degrees seems to accommodate most jobs/requirements. Greater flexibility might have been possible if the pole extension had been adjustable, but maybe that is a technical impracticality. As an older user I did find the weight noticeable after extended use but the battery life seems good.
I have a number of DeWalt tools and have never been disappointed yet. It is well made and does what it says on the box. I am a very satisfied customer, and also enjoyed the experience of buying it from Tooled-up. I am sure we will continue to purchase from this company in the future.
I had to ring yourselves and then Dewalt as the item was described as extending and I was expecting another section. Your employee didn’t know but gave me Dewalt number . They told me that it was a fixed length pole trimmer and that the info in the add was probably a bit misleading. As it is it does the job I need it for luckily
Great bit of kit in the main. The head screw comes loose other than that I couldn’t be more pleased with it.
Very good on big branches! Awesome!
Very fast delivery, I've used it a few times already and very pleased with It's performance. Much easier and lighter than my Petrol one. Cuts well, decent sized blades, quiet and light. Goes well with all on other Dewalt gear
PLUS: A pleasure to use, not heavy for the power it has and simple to adjust/manoeuvre. MINUS: Not the cheapest option on the market but so far seems like a good buy.
Do you want to make very good durable tools
unable to comment on most as arrived with damaged box AND I had to pay carriage to return. Motor is at the blade swivel point and would be sufficiently heavy to make it hard to use. Harness point is at wrong point to give assistance
Very sharp blades, poor quality head adjustment can flop up and down, lots of plastic, head heavy bias. Only used briefly will try properly next spring

Customer Questions & Answers
Q : I note your use of the term "currently" apologies for my pedantry but would I be correct in inferring the "possibility" of the Trimmer attachment being made available for the Pole Chainsaw in the UK in the near future? ALSO: the Pole Chainsaw handles work loose too quickly can you suggest a way to secure these poles? I have a tight grip and have tightened them as much as possible without causing damage.
A : Hi Duncan, I'm afraid I honestly don't know whether DeWalt intend to release a UK version of the hedge trimmer attachment or not. However the amount of questions we get about it suggests there would definitely be a market for it. With regards to the chainsaw handles I can only really suggest you try and keep the vibration down as much as possible by ensuring the chain is well oiled, only using as much extension as needed, etc
Q : I am looking to buy the DCMPH566 18v XR Cordless Pole Hedge Trimmer 550mm (bare model) and I currently have 18v 4.0A XR batteries from my drill. Can I use these batteries with the hedge trimmer and will they affect performance as they are not 5A? Guessing the actual performance will be the same, the run time will just be reduced?
A : Hi Steve, yes the DCMPH566 can be used with any of DeWalt's 18v XR batteries. As you suspect, the only difference between them will be the amount of runtime you get before the battery needs recharging.
Q : Is the motor brushless on this model
A : DeWalt make no mention of it being brushless so I'm fairly sure it has a brushed motor.
Q : The chain saw version of this can be bought with a extension section for the pole to extend the reach, can this extension section be bought to use with the hedge trimer head and extend the reach of this?
A : The DCMPH566 has a fixed pole so as far as I know there is no way to extend it. In the US they do sell a long reach machine with interchangeable hedge trimmer and chainsaw heads, but so far there is no comparable tool available on the UK market.
Q : Is there any difference in weight between the various DeWalt battery types? I want to try and make the hedge trimmer as light as possible to use. Thanks
A : Hi Tom, yes - the more you increase the battery capacity the more the size and weight will go up. If you go into the "Accessories for This Product" section and go into the batteries individually you should be able to see the weights for them right at the bottom of the product page - for instance the 2ah battery weighs 400g while the bigger Flexvolt batteries are over 1kg
Q : I own a dewalt cordless 18v. If I purchase the dewalt cordless pole hedge trimmer, with a 5 mp hour battery, will I need another charger, or can I use the one I had with my drill?
A : Hi Gerald, your charger will be compatible as long as your drill is one of the newer "XR" models with a lithium ion battery (if it looks like any of the chargers shown in the "Accessories for this Product" section on the right of the product page you'll be all good) - note that if you are purchasing the kit version which comes with a 5ah battery included this also has a charger that comes with it in the box.
Q : Is the pole telescopic or fixed? I haven’t seen any pictures of extending the pole
A : Hi Will, the DCMPH566 has a fixed pole and is not telescopic
Q : Can you use this as a regulator hedge trimmer also for normal bushes i.e. can you take off the pole so it‘s shorter? So it‘s multi use.
A : Hi Sat, the DCMPH566 has a fixed pole which is not removable I'm afraid
Q : Dewalt sells the 18v trimmer head for the pole trimmer as a separate unit. This unit is compatible with the 18v pole saw. Can you order the trimmer head and how much is it please?
A : Hi there, I'm afraid this is not something we stock and I haven't seen it available in this country so far - there's a model DCPH820BH over in the American market but I don't think there is an equivalent in the UK currently?
Q : Hi, Any idea when this item will be available? Thanks, Ross
A : Hi Ross, unfortunately its impossible to guarantee anything while large parts of the country are in lockdown but we are expecting some in towards the end of the month
