Tried maul, axes and short of spending a lot more for a mechanical splitter this is excellent. The video ad makes it look a little simpler than it is...obviously it depends on the wood and how green it is but this does work. Probably still need a bomb and mallet for the most stubborn logs which used together with the splitter covers nearly everything.
Simple but very effective and not much to go wrong. A very good idea that makes wood cutting safe and reliable. Seems to be very robust. perhaps it could have been more effective if the weight was a little heavier.
A great product which makes log splitting much easier, only slight negative is that the drill bit supplied makes just too big a hole as the whole thing moves a bit. Not a problem but a thought for the future.
I am very pleased with this tool, it is easy for me as a female senior citizen to use and very convenient to place inside my small porch so all is kept dry. The only drawback with setting it up was the finding of a big base log and getting someone to drill the hole, although this was fairly easy to sort out. I highly recommend it.
Did everything that we were told it would. The bonus is that my wife can use it as efficiently as i can . Would recommend it to anyone considering this sort of product.
Even my twelve year old is loving the wood chopping. so easy and quick. only small issue was with me not drilling the initial hole straight. Once that was sorted it has been great to use
Brilliant! Why did i struggle with an axe for so long?
Just what i needed but you have to get a very large log to use as a chopping block from somewhere and if you dont live in the country.....
Really solid piece of kit and works absolutely perfectly. Allows you to chop logs into smaller pieces for a wood burner easily and quickly. Much safer and simpler than using an axe
Once I showed my grandson how to use it I had a job to get back on it. I cut the logs around eight inches long, and they were about 10" diameter. The tool worked well ,had no trouble at all in splitting them.
Brilliant bit of kit. Correct size of drill supplied with other parts so that the pole can be inserted into a tree trunk. splits wood very well, surprising how much force can be exerted by throwing the weight down. Some reviews mention that the nut loosens, i can confirm this happens but not a major issue - not resorted to lock-tite yet just using the spanner supplied to occasionally tighten.
Excellent tool. Splits logs safely and accurately, so accurate you can cut really thin slivers for kindling. Big logs do take some effort throwing the weight down the shaft rather than dropping it. Locktite cure the locking nut problem. overall a brilliant piece of lit.
I was dubious that this device would work that well and certainly not as well as in the video (which i recommend you watch)and it didn't - quite. It splits most logs efficiently though needs a few blows per log and is more accurate than using an axe. It helps if you propel the weight down the pole but if you can lift the wight up, and i think even my 75 year old 4'9" mum could, and drop it, you can split logs up to about 9" across, with a few blows. if you can wield an axe, the smart splitter will not save you time but it will save effort and allow you to split logs pretty precisely. I use it along with using an axe, the smart splitter to initially split the whole round log and then using my axe. one nice surprise is that the smart splitter came with a drill to make the hole in the base log. i would advise putting a very small amount of oil on the metal shafts. someone else recommended using a crow bar to free up any logs with knots in that get jammed and i would second that. all in all, a remarkably effective log splitter for what it costs.
It does what it says in the advert. One for me and one for my son's christmas present, i know he will love it. delivery was magic as always, so quick and efficient. thank you
Such a simple concept and yet so effective. i have split logs up to 12" in diameter and nearly 24" long with relative ease and certainly 80% easier than with an axe. great value for money even more so at the special rate offered by tooled up when i purchased the item. I would definitely recommend this item.
It does the job, easy to install, easy to use. It take up minimal storage space.
I bought one of these several years ago and it is very effective and has proven to be reliable. It is much better, quicker, easier and safer than using an axe or wedge and sledge hammer. Good safe exercise too - i have several damaged back disks but can operate this all day provided i stand upright with the core muscles taut. i bought another this christmas for my daughter and she and her partner have already used it a great deal and are delighted. You need to be careful chopping logs with twisted grain - such as where a large limb was joined to the trunk - because the wedge can get stuck. I've found a large wrecking bar readily free the kit up.
Works well on most logs. simple to configure & use. good performance for the price.
Overall this has saved me a lot of work and it works very well. however the blade carrier did shear away from the shaft and the nylon bush split - but both replaced without quibble so all is well - i would recommend as it is a lot easier than a log grenade or axe.
Wood splitter did what it said on the tin and did it very well. Worst bit was finding a large enough log or block of wood to mount the splitter on. Amazing results much easier and effective than using an axe or wedge and hammer although it still required manual effort.
To work best the splitter needs a good solid piece of tree trunk to be fixed into. if you do that it works very well, splitting logs with just one or two strikes of the weight. it even works well with logs that have knots in them. It is better that i was expecting.
Excellent device, exactly as described in the catalogue. Delivered overnight. Absolutely delighted with all aspects.
I bought this for my bosses and they seem really happy with it. i did get to use it and it works really well and splits logs with one or two hits. noticed the slide needs some oil now ,but nothing to go wrong,it should last for years and it does a great job.
Nice easy to operate tool the thick pole that is sunk in to stump as started to wear at the point where the washers sit
I looked at this log splitter and could not believe it could work. I checked it out on all sites i could and watched videos of it in action. Finally i ordered it. Delivery was quick and when it was promised. Unwrapped and set up splitter, instructions good and not much to do, all tools supplied even 20mm wood drill. Finding a large flat bottomed log to mount it on was the most difficult. But when i tried it it worked, and again and again. Yes it needs you to expend energy throwing the weight down onto the cutter and log but it works, tried on pine, laurel, ivy and birch, wet or dry logs!!
Taking the log splitter from the box, i was impressed by the weight & the build quality of the item. As long as you have a good base to fit the pole into, putting the splitter together is easy. I was impressed right from the start, splitting logs took much less effort than swinging an axe - & much safer! The tool is capable of splitting very large sections & does all the work i had hoped for. Do yourself a favour, put away that axe & get one of these.
Got the splitter today. came with drill bit and spanner only needed a drill and the log to set it in. so basic to fit only the first two holes were not vertical, (human error) splits dry logs just great, remember to lift the weight the full height and "throw it down"
Most difficult thing about siting and using this device is finding, positioning and preparing a suitable height & size log or base in which to insert the device. Should have thought about that before felling all the trees so low to the ground as a conveniently sited tree stump on which to work would have been much more stable and easy to use. However once set up and assembled it is simplicity to use and gets maximum amount of logs split with the minimum amount of effort in the available time. Much easier in many respects than using a hydraulic log-splitter or a maul.
Once i managed to acquire the necessary chopping block it works well
This is good for splitting small dry logs. if the wood is not fully seasoned the blade stick.
This is a well designed and built device. It works both for logs and kindling. It is particularly useful for me as i have extensive arthritis.
The smart splitter is an excellent tool for the job, proving that the simplest designs are very often the best.
I bought the smart splitter when a hand problem meant i could no longer use an axe (temporarily) but my wife (who is 5 foot 1 inch tall and slim) has now taken to using it and has more fun with it than i do - and she has split some big logs with it! highly recommended, and much safer than an axe.
Provided you get a firm wide heavy base to support the rod it works very well, although usually takes a few drops of the weight for larger logs. I used a cut down railway sleeper for the base. the logs need to be cut with a fairly square base to make sure they sit upright.
An excellent piece of kit that comes with everything you need to set it up - apart from a large flat block of wood to mount it on. I bought it to chop up some large logs from several trees i had cut down so if you are doing the same have the tree surgeon leave a suitable sized lump or two (for the future). Very effective in use, easy to set up and works brilliantly. All the family had a go after a weekend lunch and we had great fun! Much more effective than an axe and wedges. I recommended it to a friend who cuts a massive amount of wood and he found it equally as good - and much more neighbour-friendly as it is quicker and quieter than alternatives.
We bought this to allow splitting of quantities of timber for home use. delivered promptly, evertything included for rapid assembly with clear instructions. Had assembled and ready for use in 20 minutes including gathering block, drill and extension lead. it performs absolutely superbly! Dont know if i would want to use it all day on a full time application, getting a little too old for all the bending down to collect split logs! very simple, very well made and comprehensively supplied, excellent for splitting logs!!!
Truly excellent product a pleasure to use. Made with top quality materials. Highly recommended and good value. I only gave it 4 stars for value because i see that it is now £10 less than i paid for it!
Wish i had known about the smart splitter before buying a splitting axe, as i would have saved money, time, miss hits & slices. I have been using the smart splitter every week since first getting it last september, what used to take me all day to split, now takes a couple of hours using the smart splitter. Excellent piece of kit.
A truly excellent tool which does exactly as advertised. service and delivery were excellent
From the moment go it was a success. just had to find a log to fit it into and get on with the job. Nice little feature was being able to chop sticks. my brother in law was impressed with it and as a result my wife sent him one as a birthday presant through your company which went without a hitch.
I would recommend this to anyone with a woodburning fire
Make sure the logs you want to split are dry. I tried to split some hard wood logs that were rather wet and the splitter can become wedged and a bit of a chave to get it free. I am also concerned about the hard plastic bush that the weight hits to drive the splitter, it is showing signs of cracking. (not sure about spares). To be fair i have used the log splitter 4-5 times a week for the last 5mths. I am very happy with it. Tudor
This is the most useful bit of kit we have had in years! makes such short work of log splitting and we can both use it without difficulty. super fast delivery too - thank you.
This splitter works well. it does need a very firm base . rather than the log in which to mount the splitter i made a solid wooden base unless you have a perfectly level surface it tends to "walk"and thishas to be avoided for the splitter to work perfectly. It saves a great deal of bending and swinging a heavy axe.
This is a 100% fit for purpose product with no gimmicks. Quality built, ease of assembly and use and easily transportable. i would pay for an optional well made wooden storage box - just like the excellent cardboard pack it arrived in. wholly satisfied with the product. (tip) when splitting kindling i place a piece of wood below where the main blade would usually strike the base log so as to stop the splitting device always striking the rubber impact cushion. The piece of wood needs to be slightly thicker than the rubber impact cushion.
Good value for money
Well made, easy to use - the base may be an issue for some - does what it says on the tin!
Excellent product so far. Pricey but cheaper than back treatment if you get injured using a splitting maul!
What a great tool, we have logs galore , its easy to use and safe....So much nicer than an axe!! instant delivery too
I saw this demonstrated at a county show and was impressed with the demo. The proof is always in how it works for you. This is probably one of the best purchases i have ever made. Easy to set up, easy to use and very effective. Has split everything i have tried very easily including some gnarled old apple wood which resisted conventional axe cutting. Would highly recommend this.
Excellent & very easy to use
Easy to build and easy to use good for all ages as i let my mum try it she is 76 year old and said that there was no effort in using it it is a lot handier then using an axe and quicker
Splits logs very easily but you must have a very solid base.A large log tends to slide about so i made a purpose built base with a flat top and this works perfectly.
The smart splitter is a much safer and more efficient alternative to the hammer and wedge or splitting axe. My problem was that i had some old very knotty tree rings with the grain curving in different directions which had defeated a conventional wedge and hammer/splitting axe. With the smart splitter you can hold odd shaped logs in such a way that you always split along the grain. Just a quick couple of taps with the weight to get it started and hold it in position ready for some serious hammering. I sometimes had to reposition the wedge to exploit cracks from different directions but it did the job. Another thing is no more stuck wedges! The smart splitter weight can be slid up the guide rod to hit the stop nut at the end and knock the wedge out! this tool design is a case of brains over brawn - highly recommended.
The best axe replacement i have ever bought! if you have a log burner it's a must!!!
This products is well-designed and of high-quality manufacture. It is straightforward to assemble and easy to use. i bought it because arthritis in my wrists was making it difficult for me to use an axe and maul - with the smartsplitter i am able to split logs far faster than i could manage with an axe or maul, and the results are more controllable. Large logs that would present problems using even a maul can be split earily by simply by repeatedly dropping the weight. highly recommended.
Fantastic!! Used it to-day for the first time. Had to get the chainsaw out to cut up a base from a felled tree, after that though the set-up was a doddle and after a couple of hours of using the logsplitter i had a wood shed (large) 3/4 full, with no bad back due to swinging an axe. Mint!!! by tudor
The spliter does as it says very good product.
Works well and has cut through every thing i have tried
Excellent tool that is easy to use and is just as good for chopping kindling as it is for splitting larger logs.
Simple & effective tool that makes spliting logs a safe & pleasant task. As a bonus it only takes a small space to store when not in use.
Hi i have been using the splitter daily since it was delivered (very quickly i may add) it's even better than i thought it could possibly be. Saves so much time ,it even goes thru damp/wet wood (more effort required immediately)but not that much. would defo recommend that you buy one of these along with the saw horse (see video)
The smart splitter manual striking weight log splitter is an excellent piece of kit that works very well on the logs i have tried it on, and they were newly cut green wood. The kit is complete, even including a 20mm flat bit. Make sure you have a chunky flat 35 cm log as a base for the tool. Recommended for anyone with significant amounts of logs to split. Also takes up very little storage room.
Such a clever idea that works perfectly would recommend you to buy one if you need to split logs etc saves so much time and effort
The tool certainly works well on logs of medium size. If you have larger logs it takes more effort because you have to drop the splitter many more times. It arrived very quickly
Fantastic piece of kit. Splits logs of all sizes with ease. Highly recommended splitter and far less expensive here than anywhere else. Delivered in lightning quick time too. Highly recommended supplier and product!
I asked my husband, who is the user, he replied. "well, it works" and when pressed for more details added "it is very good actually. It works with different types of logs. The hard ones take several strikes but this is ok." the nut came off the top at one stage (and was difficult to find) so we have given it less than 100% on build quality. Otherwise good. Much easier and less hazardous than an axe or mallet and wedges. It took a while to set up and needs a large base, probably several large bases, as i imagine the base will break up after a while.
Took abit of time to get the holder 100% straight in base holder but once in even my 12 year old son can use it with out rish of injury
Great product - much easier than axe and chocks
The splitter is a very good product. Not only does it split your logs it gives you a workout at the same time. As other reviewers have said, it does take quite a few strikes to split larger and harder logs. It works exceptionally well making kindling. Yes, the nut at the top of the pole is always working loose and you do need a hammer to remove logs that won't split and get stuck on the blade. You also need a very large base to fix the pole into to ensure everything is steady and safe. I was pleased to find the drill bit and spanner were included in the kit - a thoughtful touch. Overall an excellent tool but i think it is somewhat overpriced for what it is. £49.99 would have been better value for money in my opinion.
The design appeared too simple when i first saw it. it works and works well on both dry and newly cut timbers. these being mainly beech, hawthorn & pine. We have not neede to try it on kindling so i cannot comment on that feature.
assembling and using the splitter is very easy. i used it for logs of max length of 30cm, and various diameters and shapes and it did split the logs without failing although not always after the first go. i have to see how it performs in the long term
This is a good solid piece of kit but is not a miracle worker. it is able to chop a sizeable log but comes under pressure for larger logs and hard solid timber. the nut at the top keeps coming loose and the rubber seal underneath it has already worn away but this is easily replaceable. overall, the splitter is excellent for the fairer sex (i.E. Me), as much less force is needed compared to using an axe. i cut quite an amount of timber for a small stove in a couple of hours. i would recommend this product but don't expect it to chop evernthing. A lot more than
Very effective piece of kit
Only just set this up, but initial impressions are good. solidly built, with a heavy ?Brass alloy pole to fix to the block, and a lighter pole for the striking weight to run on. the blades are sharp, and i expect will be sharpenable if needed in time. the drill bit is good, although a little short to acheive the recomended 12cm hole to mount the pole into. my first attempt was slightly off true, leading to the blade swinging around when not in use. thta was using a drill stand - i would not recomend drilling free hand unless you are very steady! its only bee used to split recently cut green logs - takes a few strikes, but i imagne will do better vs seasoned wood. the biggest problem was finding a mounting block as the base, as it needs to be a fair size
It works well even with bigger logs and good for kindling to. Safe also and the kids love to help with some supervision from dad. Can be used in or out of the garage depending on the weather.
Very useful and easy to use log splitting tool. Needs wood block to be mounted on. Once we got the block - all very smooth. All tools needed to assemble are supplied. Useful as can produce kindling from logs too. So far so good!
This is just great - splits logs very effectively. great for making kindling or splitting larger stuff. seems very well built. simple design.
The equipment is much safer to use than an axe and sledge hammer. I was surprised how easy it was to split a big log. Highly recommended.
Just tried this today and it really does work amazingly well even on big logs. far better than an axe and simple to use. no fuel or power required ao 100% green. it seems to be very sturdy and there's not much to go wrong so reliability should be 5/5. it's a bit tricky to ensure the support rod is vertical and the high-quality spanner and drill bit are a waste if, like me, you already have such tools. otherwise fully recommended.
an excellent product, well built, and as they say, it dose what it says on the tin, plus very good value for money. I would recommend to anyone.
A really great little product. It can split huge slices of tree trunk all the way down to making kindling with it! childs-play to use and makes logging safe, easy and quite fun to do! i also bought a smart log-holder which is proving to be another great little product. both items work exactly as shown in their respective videos. I can highly recommend both of these "loggers" to anyone with lots of logs to make.
This splitter was able to split twisted old sycamore and holly crowns that my log maul, heavy axe, and hammer and wedge could not cope with. it couldn't split every log in the pile, but was far and away the best solution to log splitting at the price. it was easy to put together, a 20mm drill bit and a big spanner were included in the box. for me the weight could be a little heavier, but you would be able to use this for a couple of hours without getting too fatigued, and its much safer to use than an axe. i like it and will continue to use it.
I am sorry but although the idea is good it is only suitable for softwood. after a few drops of the cone weight the looking nut works it self loose-no matter how tight you do it. i could not recommend this unit
Having read most of the reviews for this particular product and noted that most were 5 stars i opted to buy one. Now let me explain that most of my logs are seasoned and dry and this log splitter couldn't split any of them. not one of them. Most of the time the splitter jammed in the log. I boxed it up and phoned the company saying i wanted to return it. The chap on the end of the phone clearly wasn't impressed and i had to struggle to keep him on the phone long enough to explain my predicament. I paid a delivery firm to pick it up and return it. They never turned up so i shall now keep the log splitter and use it for soft wood where it ought to perform more satisfactory.
I used this product quite successfully for about one hour, then managed to destroy the white nylon bush (cracked first, then shattered)which takes the full impact of the 3.5kg sliding weight. this bush does not appear to be fit for purpose, and is not even mentioned in the literature supplied. I am now unable to use the log splitter until a replacement nylon bush is received.
